{"id":333954,"date":"2018-10-20T18:44:07","date_gmt":"2018-10-21T01:44:07","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/?p=333954"},"modified":"2018-10-20T18:44:07","modified_gmt":"2018-10-21T01:44:07","slug":"pac-12-recap-usc-swims-past-utah-washington-state-wins","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/pac-12-recap-usc-swims-past-utah-washington-state-wins\/","title":{"rendered":"Pac-12 Recap: USC Swims Past Utah; Washington State Wins"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Sophomores <strong>Caitlin Tycz<\/strong> and <strong>Marta Ciesla<\/strong> won two events apiece to lead the USC women&#8217;s swimming and diving team to a 142-120 road win at Utah in the first dual meet of the season on Friday (Oct. 19).<\/p>\n<p>Tycz, one of many sophomores who are off to strong starts to the 2018-19 season, won the 200y fly in 1:59.63 with junior Catherine Sanchez second (2:01.79) and freshman <strong>Makenna Turner<\/strong> third (2:03.92). Tycz came back to win the 100y fly in 54.51.<\/p>\n<p>Ciesla sprinted her way to a pair of wins, taking the 50y free in 23.42 and claiming the 100y free in 51.42, just 0.13 ahead of junior teammate <strong>Kirsten Vose<\/strong> (51.55).<\/p>\n<p>Junior <strong>Tatum Wade<\/strong> got USC&#8217;s first win of the day with a 1:50.52 in the 200y free, Vose also taking second in that in 1:52.07 while <strong>Maddie Meisel<\/strong> was third (1:53.33).<\/p>\n<p>After her pair of seconds, Vose got her own win in the 200y IM, touching first in 2:04.97.<\/p>\n<p>Sophomore <strong>Maggie Aroesty<\/strong> found the winner&#8217;s circle in the 100y breast with a 1:03.41, winning by 0.05. Aroesty was also second in the 200y breast (2:17.17).<\/p>\n<p>Senior <strong>Elizabeth Stinson<\/strong>, second in the 1000y free (10:24.88), won the 500y free today in 5:05.64.<\/p>\n<p>USC closed the meet with a win in the 200y free relay as Ciesla, Wade, Sanchez and senior <strong>Lily Dubroff<\/strong> won in 1:34.89.<\/p>\n<p>Here is what else happened in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/meet\/pac-12-swimming\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Pac-12<\/a> this weekend:<\/p>\n<h3>Washington State tops Idaho<\/h3>\n<p>The Washington State swim team took a 159-139 victory over the University of Idaho, winning 11 events, including both relays. Seven Cougars notched season-best times in their respective events.<\/p>\n<p>Senior <strong>Jasmine Margetts<\/strong> led the way for the Cougars, winning three individual events and swimming the opening leg of the first place 200 medley relay team. The Torrance, Calif. native, along with teammates <strong>Linnea Lindberg, Sophia Balamaceda<\/strong>, and <strong>Chloe Larson<\/strong>, notched the second-best time this season in the event, touching the wall in 1:45.12. Margetts also took home wins in the 200 fly, 200 back, and 200 IM; each of her times were nearly four seconds faster than the second-place finisher.<\/p>\n<p>Junior <strong>Ryan Falk<\/strong> garnered three wins against the Vandals, including the 400 free relay. Alongside teammates Larson, <strong>Payton Bokowy<\/strong>, and <strong>Keiana Fountaine<\/strong>, the team swam an impressive 3:32.54, the fastest time this season for the Cougars. Falk also won the 1000 free with a season-best 10:23.54, and the 500 free. The Portland, Ore. native also swam to a fifth place finish in the 100 free.<\/p>\n<p>Fountaine continued to perform well for the Cougars, winning both the 100 and 200 free. Fountaine&#8217;s wins are her second in the respective events this season, after winning the 200 free against Boise State and the 100 free against San Diego. Fountaine also swam a season-best 58.89 in the 100 fly for a fourth place finish.<\/p>\n<p>Lindberg and sophomores <strong>Mackenzie Duarte<\/strong> and <strong>Taylor McCoy<\/strong> each notched a win against the Vandals. Lindberg notched a win in the 100 breast with a time of 1:04.93. The Sweden native also notched a sixth place finish in the 200 breast. Duarte swam to a first place finish in the 200 breast and a third place finish in the 100 breast. McCoy, a Pullman, Wash. native, notched a season-best time in the 100 back, winning the event with a 58.18.
