In six years of existence, the men\u2019s and women\u2019s teams\u2014overseen the past three years by Head Coach <strong>Peter Ollis<\/strong>\u2014has enjoyed one winning season combined (the <a href=\"https:\/\/monmouthscots.com\/schedule.aspx?schedule=210&amp;path=wpolo\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">women\u2019s team<\/a> went 9-8-1 in 2017). Last Sunday during the <a href=\"https:\/\/collegiatewaterpolo.org\/2018d3easternchampionship\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">2018 Division III Eastern Championship<\/a> at Johns Hopkins University&#8217;s\u00a0Newton White Athletic Center, Ollis\u2019 team dropped two heart-wrenching decisions. In the morning there was a 15-14 loss in overtime to Connecticut College. Later that day, a 16-15 defeat by Austin, sealed when the Kangaroos\u2019 <strong>Andrew Pope<\/strong> hit a five meter penalty shot with 8 seconds, left gave his team its first NCAA win in program history.<\/p>\n<p>With a roster of dominated by homegrown talent\u2014junior <strong>Jesus Aguirre<\/strong>, tied for the team lead with 22 goals, is from Cicero, a suburb of Chicago three hours from Monmouth\u2014the Fighting Scots\u2019 success should not yet be measured in wins and losses. Photo Courtesy: Greg Bartram\/betterImage<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Immediately following his team\u2019s loss to the Camels of Connecticut College, Ollis spoke with <em>Swimming World<\/em> about his team&#8217;s burgeoning rivalry with Illinois-based McKendree College as well as plans to expand DIII water polo\u2019s reach both in the American heartland and beyond.<\/p>\n<p><strong>&#8211; That was a compelling match against Connecticut. What\u2019s exciting is your guys were playing their hearts out.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Yeah, it was a good fight and a good challenge for us, especially being a DIII team. We play a lot of DIIs, so a good, devoted, Division III tournament [is good]. I wish the result went the other way but it was a good showing.<\/p>\n<p>We\u2019ve got [five] freshmen and we\u2019re very proud of them.<\/p>\n<p><strong>&#8211; This tournament is currently just for East Coast schools; what about structuring a national tournament by including West Coast schools such as Pomona-Pitzer and Whittier?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>It would be fantastic. I know there\u2019s talk with the men\u2019s and women\u2019s [side]; I think the women\u2019s might be slightly further ahead in an East Coast vs. West Coast championship.<\/p>\n<p>A big thing is the women in the East have a more <a href=\"https:\/\/collegiatewaterpolo.org\/varsity\/schedules\/2018-division-iii-schedules-women\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">devoted conference<\/a>, while the men\u2019s teams\u2014the DIII compete with the DII\u2019s and the DI\u2019s\u2014you know your Hopkins and your MITs that are DIII by institution but DII and DI by play.<\/p>\n<p>It would be fantastic for the growth if it were to happen. The big thing is that exposure is huge\u2014bringing kids from California who don\u2019t know where the middle of Illinois is. For us to get to play some high-profile schools would be fantastic for us.<\/p>\n<p><strong>&#8211; There\u2019s a ton of talent on the East Coast; are they finding their way to Monmouth, IL?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>If you\u2019re bad it doesn\u2019t matter what your zip code is, you\u2019re bad. If you\u2019re good, it doesn\u2019t matter where you\u2019re from. Our men\u2019s and women\u2019s rosters\u2014the two of them are meshed with East and West Coast [players]. I\u2019m just looking for kids who can play. Chicago\u2019s our lifeblood; our men are three-quarters [of the roster]; our women it\u2019s a little under 50%. There\u2019s great kids out East; one of our starters,\u00a0<strong>Tommy Schneider<\/strong>,\u00a0is from Pennridge out in Pennsylvania. We\u2019ve got kids from all across; we\u2019ve got some Florida kids\u2014our goalie <strong>Kyle Jones<\/strong> is from there. And we\u2019re trying to get them from everywhere.<\/p>\n<p><strong>&#8211; Austin College launched their men&#8217;s program this year. What are your thoughts about the arrival of the Kangaroos on the NCAA varsity polo scene?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>They\u2019re in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/whats-wrong-with-this-picture-novice-water-polo-program-joins-mpsf\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">MPSF<\/a> for the men. For the women they\u2019re in the CWPA in the West [bracket]; that\u2019s actually the side our women are in as well. Seems like they\u2019re committed to travel\u2014they\u2019re flying plenty for everything.<\/p>\n<p>From what I\u2019ve seen they\u2019ve got a really good squad\u2014especially for a first year they\u2019re doing a great job. Any time a water polo team is added it\u2019s awesome, DIII especially because there are teams that we can play. Adding teams is always going to be exciting\u2014we love it.<\/p>\n<p><strong>&#8211; The closest team to you is McKendree. The Bearcats appear to be a natural rival for the Fighting Scots.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>In our conference, there\u2019s three Division III teams and four Division IIs and we play in the Mid-Atlantic West\u2014McKendree, Salem, Gannon, Mercyhurst, Connecticut, Washington and Jefferson. Those are the seven team on our side of the conference. So, it\u2019s DII and DIII amalgamation. We used to have La Salle, so we had DI, DII and DIII.<\/p>\n<p>As a local team, we\u2019re able to play them for our senior game at home on a Tuesday. It\u2019s tough for our guys; you want to play a game on Saturday or Sunday, but you don\u2019t want to drive somewhere for eight hours. We\u2019ll go to Lebanon in two weekends and it\u2019s a three hour drive, which for us\u2014we love that. Any time you get to play extra games it\u2019s awesome.<\/p>\n<p><strong>&#8211; How do you look at the sport\u2019s trajectory at both the local and national level.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>I\u2019m excited to see more teams. You always hear rumbling; by my estimation 20 teams are being added! You never know what\u2019s actually true and what\u2019s a rumor. The biggest thing for us is it\u2019s exciting to have the men\u2019s team growing.<\/p>\n<p>[We\u2019ll see] how the MPSF and the CWPA will work out. A lot of DIII teams joining are <a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/penn-state-behrends-tristan-talks-about-lifeline-to-the-mpsf\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">going<\/a> MPSF, like Austin. For the women I think it\u2019s awesome. Women\u2019s growth is exciting. We\u2019ve got established Division III, established Division II and Division I conferences in the East. The Division II teams compete in the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.thewwpa.com\/sport\/0\/2.php\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">WWPA<\/a> (Western Water Polo Association).<\/p>\n<p>With the men we\u2019re working towards that. The best thing is that East Coast water polo is really exciting right now. What Harvard\u2019s doing\u2014really, all those Ivies are beating each other up but they\u2019re <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gocrimson.com\/sports\/mwaterpolo\/2018-19\/releases\/20180915yhs3sp\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">taking on<\/a> some of the big guys on the West Coast.
