{"id":333654,"date":"2018-10-17T18:12:12","date_gmt":"2018-10-18T01:12:12","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/?p=333654"},"modified":"2018-10-17T18:12:12","modified_gmt":"2018-10-18T01:12:12","slug":"cate-campbell-wins-two-australian-women-in-sport-awards","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/cate-campbell-wins-two-australian-women-in-sport-awards\/","title":{"rendered":"Cate Campbell Wins Two Australian Women in Sport Awards"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Swimming Australia has congratulated <a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/?s=cate+campbell\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Cate Campbell<\/strong><\/a> after winning two awards, including the supreme award of \u2018Sports Women of the Year\u2019, at the Women\u2019s Health Women in Sport Awards in Sydney last night.<\/p>\n<p>Campbell also took out the \u2018Comeback of the Year\u2019 award which recognises athletes that have comeback from a physical, mental or emotional challenge to accomplish a sporting high.<\/p>\n<p>Following the 2016 Rio Olympics, Campbell took a break from competitive swimming and returned to the pool at the 2017 Australian Short Course Championships where she broke the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/cate-campbell-takes-back-100-free-scm-world-record-at\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">world record in the 100m freestyle<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>She continued her strong form into the Gold Coast Commonwealth Games <a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/commonwealth-games-notes-cate-campbell-better-than-ever\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">picking up three gold medals<\/a> and one silver, including anchoring the women\u2019s 4x100m relay to a world record.<\/p>\n<p>At the recent Pan Pacific Championships in Tokyo she <a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/around-the-swimming-world-cate-campbell-signature-performance-at-pan-pacs\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">secured five gold medals<\/a>, including a personal best in the 100m freestyle and a meet record in the 50m freestyle.<\/p>\n<p>Swimming Australia Chief Executive <strong>Leigh Russell<\/strong> congratulated Campbell on taking out the two awards.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSwimming is extremely fortunate to have a role model like Cate for all young Australian women to aspire to be.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe is a fearless competitor and her commitment, resilience and drive to succeed are qualities that embody an exceptional athlete.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe represents Australia with immense pride, whether that be in the pool or out of it, and is truly a wonderful ambassador for swimming,\u201d said Ms. Russell.<\/p>\n<p>Swimming was strongly represented in the awards nominations with <strong>Ariarne Titmus<\/strong> receiving a nomination for the \u2018One to Watch\u2019 and the women\u2019s world record breaking 4x100m relay team comprising of <strong>Shayna Jack<\/strong>, <strong>Emma McKeon<\/strong> and <strong>Bronte<\/strong> and <strong>Cate Campbell<\/strong> nominated for \u2018Moment of the \u2018Year.<\/p>\n<p>Russell congratulated the other swimming finalists nominated during the evening.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI would also like to congratulate Ariarne, Shayna, Bronte and Emma for their nominations last night.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThese athletes have all had exceptional years and should be very proud of what they have achieved.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey set a great example for our future generation of champion swimmers,\u201d she added.<\/p>\n<p>Corporal <strong>Sonya Newman<\/strong> was also nominated in the Leadership Legend category for her contribution to the Invictus Games where she is mentoring fellow athletes.
