This week two Russian teens led their country to the top of the medal table at the 2018 Youth Olympic Games down in Buenos Aires, while one swimmer got the NCAA season rolling with some fast early season swims. Catch on those stories and more below in the week that was!<\/span><\/p>\n

The Week That Was #5 – Colgate Men\u2019s Swimming and Diving Suspended<\/b><\/h3>\n

The Colgate University Men\u2019s Swimming and Diving team <\/span>has been suspended from all meets for the rest of the calendar year<\/span><\/a> and its winter training trip following violations of Colgate\u2019s policies related to hazing and alcohol consumption. The suspension of the team came after an investigation by the Department of Athletics and the Dean of the College Office, which concluded that the men\u2019s team had engaged in a team hazing activity that also included high-risk alcohol consumption. The men\u2019s team first scheduled competition will be at the University of Buffalo Diving Invitational on January 11, followed by a dual meet the next day against Boston University. The Week That Was #4 – World Champion Ning Zetao Of China Eligible To Return To Competition<\/b><\/h3>\n

World Champion <\/span>Ning Zetao <\/b>of China is now <\/span>eligible to participate in the 2018 Chinese National Swimming Championships<\/span><\/a>. Ning was the first Chinese swimmer to win a gold medal in the 100 freestyle at a World Championships, when he earned gold at the 2015 World Champs in Barcelona. He was subsequently kicked off of the Chinese National Team in 2016 after violating team rules. Ning has not competed since Chinese Nationals following the 2016 Olympics, where he clocked a 47.92. The 2018 Chinese Nationals are scheduled to take place from October 13-17. <\/span><\/p>\n

The Week That Was #3 – Harvard Diving Coach Resigns After Sexual Misconduct Allegations<\/b><\/h3>\n

Chris Heaton <\/b>officially resigned<\/span><\/a> this week after being <\/span>placed on leave<\/span><\/a> by Harvard Athletics last week following allegations of sexual misconduct at an Indiana Diving Academy known as Ripfest. Heaton was hired as the head diving coach at Harvard in August, when the school claims they were unaware of the allegations against Heaton. <\/span>Tracy Bird <\/b>will step in immediately as the new interim diving coach, while the school prepares to conduct a national search for a new permanent successor. <\/span><\/p>\n

The Week That Was #2 – Mallory Comerford Leads Louisville To SMU Classic Title<\/b><\/h3>\n

With the NCAA now underway teams across the country were kicking off their dual meet season and showing some impressive early speed. A standout of the weekend was Louisville\u2019s <\/span>Mallory Comerford<\/b><\/a>, who helped the No. 8 Cardinals to a win at the 2018 SMU Classic with three individual and six total event wins over the course of the two day meet. Comerford won the 200 free (1:42.79), 500 free (4:40.33), and 100 free (47.57), which are all the fastest times in the country this year. Her time in the 200 free was also an NCAA A cut. The senior also delivered on relays, contributing to the 200, 400, and 800 free relay wins for the Cardinals. Her split of 46.86 on the opening 400 medley relay showed some impressive early season speed. For reference, only Comerford and <\/span>Simone Manuel <\/b>split sub-47 on the 4×100 medley relay at NCAA\u2019s last season. The Week That Was #1 – Andrei Minakov Wins Six Golds At 2018 Youth Olympics<\/b><\/h3>\n

This week the 2018 Youth Olympic Games took place in Buenos Aires, Argentina, with Russia ending up at the top of medal table at the end of the six day meet. The Russians took home a total of 19 medals over the six-day meet, including 13 golds, 4 silvers, and 2 bronze medals. <\/span>Andrei Minakov <\/b>and <\/span>Kliment Kolesnikov <\/b>were crucial to the success of the Russians, with Minakov taking home six of those gold medals, including 3 individual golds. Kolesnikov was also responsible for 3 individual golds, completing a backstroke event sweep while also contributing key legs to the Russian relays. Other notable swimmers included world junior record holder <\/span>Kristof Milak<\/b>, who won his speciality event, the 200 fly, while also adding gold medals in the 200 and 400 freestyles. Countrymate <\/span>Ajna Kesely <\/b>also had a successful week, winning gold in the 200, 400, and 800 freestyle events. <\/span><\/p>\n
