ATHENS, Ohio, February 2. IT was a record-setting day for the Ohio University Swimming and Diving Team on Saturday afternoon. The Bobcats defeated 2011-12 Mid-American Conference champion Toledo for the first time since 2008, winning by a final score of 170-130. Two Bobcat divers also established new program records from the one and three-meter diving boards in the victory.<\/p>\n
The victory was Ohio's fifth in a row and now has the Bobcats sitting at 5-2 with a 1-1 mark in MAC dual meets. With the loss, Toledo is 2-4 and 0-3 in the MAC.<\/p>\n
Ohio and Toledo split the day's relays at the beginning and end of the meet. The Bobcats claimed first place in the opening event of the afternoon, the 200 medley relay, in a brisk time of 1:44.91. This time was less than half a second slower than the 10th fastest time in program history. The Rockets were able to take the 400 freestyle relay in the final event of the day, winning in a time of 3:27.43.<\/p>\n
The early relay win propelled Ohio to a fast start, helping the Bobcats claim first place in three of the next four events to leap out to an early 58-34 lead. Laurin Williams (Shoreline, Wash.) and Bianca Hauzer (Germiston, South Africa) claimed first and second in the 1000 freestyle; Addison Ferguson (Westfield Center, Ohio) took the top spot in the 100 backstroke, and Tori Bagan (Roanoke, Ind.) touched the wall first in the 100 breaststroke.<\/p>\n
Toledo bounced back in the next event, taking the first two places in the 200 butterfly. Tori Bagan's sister, McKenzie Bagan, touched the wall first in this event, clocking in at 2:02.84. Her teammate Kristen Nunnelly placed second in 2:05.67.<\/p>\n
Lauren Funk (Springfield, Ohio) prevented the Rockets from winning back-to-back events, as she took first place in the 50 freestyle in a brisk time of 23.31 seconds. Though it was not a career-best mark for the senior, it was the eighth fastest time in that event ever recorded by a Bobcat.<\/p>\n
Kristin Capcik (Milwaukee, Wisc.) began the record-setting performances from the three-meter diving board in the next event. The junior scored 337.35 over her six dives, breaking the prior program top mark by more than four points. Morgan Srail (Avon Lake, Ohio), the previous record-holder, placed second in the event with a score of 300.53.<\/p>\n
Later on in the afternoon, Haleigh Bartlett (Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio) placed first in the one-meter diving competition, scoring a 325.27. This new record beat the previous mark by a large, 15-point margin. Capcik then placed second in this event, setting a personal-best score of 288.90.<\/p>\n
Ohio will next be in action on Friday, Feb. 8 against Youngstown State. First event between the Bobcats and the Penguins is scheduled for 5 p.m. from the Ohio University Aquatic Center.<\/p>\n
