THE 13th-ranked Georgia men’s swimming and diving team lost a thriller Saturday afternoon to No. 4 Tennessee at Gabrielsen Natatorium in Athens. The Volunteers won the final event by less than a second to hold on for the 128-115 win.

"This was our best men’s meet in a few years," said Georgia head coach Jack Bauerle. "(This meet) was a little growing up for us, and I think it will help us. It hurts a lot more because we had a chance to win. We
wanted to get it down to the last relay when anything can happen."

"This was very high-level meet today," added Bauerle.
"We are certainly disappointed in the outcome but not the effort."

Tennessee held a 115-111 lead heading into the final event — the 400-yard freestyle relay. The Bulldogs needed to finish first in the event to win the meet. It was nip-and-tuck throughout the entire race and less than 0.3 of a second separated the two teams heading into the final 25 yards. Vol Renato Gueraldi’s split of 23.40 in the final 50 yards allowed Tennessee to edge the Bulldogs by 0.68 of a second to win the race and the meet. Tennessee clocked 3:00.48 to the Dawgs' 3;01.16.

The Vols denied Georgia a win on the team’s Senior Day, which would have been only the second in a series that began in 1968. The lone dual meet win for the Bulldogs against Tennessee came during the 1997-98
season.

Today's meet was close from the start when Tennessee’s 200-yard medley relay team out-touched Georgia to take the first event.

Participating in his first 1,650-yard freestyle of the season, Georgia’s Robert Margalis finished first with an NCAA provisional qualifying and team season-best time of 15:15.69. In another race that came down to the wire, Andrew Mahaney posted a team-best 1:39.16 in the 200-yard freestyle, but he finished second behind Tennessee’s Brett Tannhauser by 0.06 of a second.

Tennessee's Andrew Bree won the 200 IM in 1:49.45, with Margalis and Randy Lam second and third
respectively. Margalis swam 1:49.85 while Lam clocked in with a season-best time of 1:51.34.

In a close one meter diving competition, freshman Todd Avery was edged out in the final dive by Tennessee’s Phillip Jones to finish second by a mere 1.88 points. Jones won the one-meter with 319.80. He had an easier time taking the 3-meter with 381.30 points.

Georgia swept the top two spots in the 200-yard butterfly, as Lam and Mahaney finished with times of 1:48.28 and 1:48.58, respectively. In the 100-yard freestyle, Matt Brado won in 45.79, just edging Tennessee's Renato Gueraldi, 45.82. Gueraldi came back to lead a one-two Tennessee sweep in the 50 free with his 20.20.

Georgia's Marc Lindsay had a season-best time of 1:45.33 to win the 200-yard backstroke. Freshman Peter Osborn came in third.

Margalis posted his second win of the contest with time of 4:25.41 in the 500-yard freestyle. Kyle Salyards swam a season-best 2:00.09 en route to a first-place finish in the 200-yard breaststroke. Trailing the Vols' Bree for the first seven laps, he uncorked a powerful sprint on the final lap to beat Bree by 53-hundredths of a second.

"Margalis had a spectacular meet with two wins," added Bauerle. "It is one thing to have two individual wins, but it is another when the mile is first. Randy Lam and certainly Marc Lindsay swam well. I just think
the guys showed a lot of guts.

"They were a little better that we were today, but our kids did a great job, especially considering it was supposed to be a 30-40 point difference. This is the kind of meet we need to get better."

"Kyle showed some guts (in the 200 breaststroke)," offered Bauerle. "He seemed to be out of the race and came back to win it. He has a good memory of going fast and he knows how to swim the last 50 (yards)."

Georgia will be back in action Friday, Feb. 1, as the Bulldogs face the South Carolina Gamecocks in Columbia, SC.

Final Score:
Georgia 115
Tennessee 128

                                    Results

Event 1 Men
