﻿{"id":331933,"date":"2018-10-04T13:21:36","date_gmt":"2018-10-04T20:21:36","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/?p=331933"},"modified":"2018-10-04T13:21:36","modified_gmt":"2018-10-04T20:21:36","slug":"bradlee-ashby-breaks-national-record-at-new-zealand-short-course-championships","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/bradlee-ashby-breaks-national-record-at-new-zealand-short-course-championships\/","title":{"rendered":"Bradlee Ashby Breaks National Record at New Zealand Short Course Championships"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Bradlee Ashby<\/strong> has been in scintillating form at the 2018 New Zealand Short Course Championships, breaking his second national record in as many days.<\/p>\n<p>Ashby\u2019s (North Shore) 53.06 time in winning the final of the men\u2019s 100m individual medley, sliced 0.43 off <strong>Daniel Bell&#8217;s<\/strong>\u00a0record set in 2009 at the Australian Short Course Championships.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI was talking to Daniel Bell earlier about the record and I really wanted to beat it, and it feels really good,\u201d Ashby said in his post-race interview.<\/p>\n<p>Bell was on hand to present the medals for the 100m individual medley and was delighted to see the record go.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s great records are being broken from years ago, it shows that we are moving forward again,\u201d says Bell.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Wilrich Coetzee<\/strong> (North Shore) finished second in 54.02 and <strong>Jeremy Tasker<\/strong> (North Canterbury) third in 55.78.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Helena Gasson<\/strong> (Coast) returned to competitive competition after taking a break following the 2018 Commonwealth Games.<\/p>\n<p>Gasson was all class in dominating the women\u2019s 100m individual medley final and surprised herself with a time of 1:00.61, slightly over her personal best and national record of 1:00.45.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m really surprised with that time and to get close to my PB, I\u2019ve done no taper at all for this meet so I\u2019m super happy,\u201d says Gasson.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Daniel Hunter<\/strong> (Howick Pakuranga) is still the sprint king, winning gold in the men\u2019s 50m freestyle in 22.31.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019ve done a lot of aerobic work leading up to this so the speed is not yet there but I\u2019m hoping it will be there for the 100m (freestyle) on Saturday,\u201d says Hunter.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Tyron Henry<\/strong> (Howick Pakuranga), 17, the youngest in the A-final picked up the silver medal in 22.79, a new personal best time. <strong>Charles Porter<\/strong> (Vikings) won bronze in 22.88.<\/p>\n<p>In the women\u2019s 50m freestyle final, <strong>Rebecca Moynihan<\/strong> (Raumati) showed the power of her finishing speed, winning her first national title in 25.30. <strong>Paige Flynn<\/strong> (St Peter\u2019s) was second in 25.46, to go with the 100m backstroke final she won last night.<\/p>\n<p>Age-group champion<strong> Chelsey Edwards<\/strong> (SwimZone) was third in 25.75.<\/p>\n<p>North Canterbury swimmer <strong>George Adam&#8217;s<\/strong> fist pumping at the finish of the men&#8217;s 400m freestyle Para multi-class drew cheers and smiles from the crowd. Adams won gold from <strong>Benjamin Gould<\/strong> (Geraldine).<\/p>\n<p><strong>Chris Arbuthnott<\/strong> (Ice Breaker) and <strong>Tupou Neiufi<\/strong> (Howick Pakuranga) both won the men\u2019s and women\u2019s Para multi-class 100m individual medley and 50m freestyle events.<\/p>\n<p><strong>George Schroeder<\/strong> (Hokitika) was elated to win the men\u2019s 200m breaststroke in 2:09.73, well inside the FINA B and consideration time for selection to the FINA World Short Course Championships in Decemeber.<br \/>\n<strong>Eliot Lundon-Moore<\/strong> (Aquabladz) won the silver medal (2:11.58) with <strong>Johnson Bishop<\/strong> (Taupo) winning bronze (2:17.27).<\/p>\n<p>Matamata swim club\u2019s <strong>Matt Hyde<\/strong> added the men\u2019s 400m freestyle title to the 800m freestyle crown he won on the opening night.<\/p>\n<p>Hyde pulled away from the field from the 150m mark to win by over 4 seconds (3:49.52s) from <strong>Callum Prime<\/strong> (North Shore), 3:53.73 and <strong>Quinton Hurley<\/strong> (3:54.24).<\/p>\n<p>The 2018 New Zealand Short Course Championships are being held at the Sir Owen G.
