Swimming’s Respectful Rebel: A Feature on Michael Andrew<\/h2>\n

Michael Andrew<\/strong> turned pro at the age of 14. He embraced the non-traditional Ultra-Short Race-Pace Training. Despite his naysayers, the 19-year-old fully believes he\u2019s doing what he needs to do to pull out his God-given potential. And he proved it this summer with his men\u2019s high-point performance at nationals and a 50 free gold medal at the Pan Pacific Championships.<\/p>\n

Andrew had 38 national age group records by 2013… at age 14. He wasn\u2019t exactly a household name, but his peers and many coaches couldn\u2019t help but notice the amphibious teen. Then, he grabbed the attention of the entire swimming community\u2014and many beyond the pool\u2014by turning professional at the age of 14.<\/p>\n

Andrew had just made history by becoming the youngest male swimmer in U.S. history to turn professional. They knew it would cause a stir, but the decision was a straightforward one for the Andrew family.<\/p>\n

In 2015, two years after turning pro, Michael was named Swimmer of the Meet at the World Junior Championships in Singapore after winning a gold, three silvers and a bronze. At the 2016 Olympic Trials, Andrew placed fourth in the 100 meter breast with a world junior record of 59.82. At his final World Junior Championships in 2017, Michael set the pool ablaze\u2014breaking world junior records in the 50 free (21.75), 50 back (24.63) and 50 fly (23.22)\u2014and taking gold in the three events. Momentum built with each summer.<\/p>\n
