YESTERDAY afternoon the president of Daytona State College made the official announcement that the men&#039;s and women&#039;s swimming teams would be cut, ending a four-year rebirth of the team that had last been cut in 1986. Daytona State finished second at the junior college national championships last spring and could do so again in its final season. The diving teams had already been cut last fall, and though the school will no longer fund a swim team, the campus pool will continue to run community programs such as water aerobics and swim lessons.<\/p>\n<p>Also announced yesterday afternoon were the six finalists to host the 2016 Olympic swimming trials. Along with Omaha, which hosted the meet in 2008 and 2012, former Trials host Indianapolis is in the running. Indy played host on five occasions, with 2000 being its last go-round. The other cities on the shortlist are each angling to bring the Olympic Trials to their cities for the first time: Greensboro, North Carolina; Jacksonville, Florida; St. Louis and San Antonio. A group from USA Swimming will visit each city and make their decision in late April. Hosting the Trials will bring millions of dollars to the lucky city, as thousands of swimming fans and hundreds of swimmers descend on the city for more than a week.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>PHOENIX, Arizona, January 15.
