ROCHESTER, Michigan, January 11. SANDRA Czerska won the 100- and 200-yard butterfly events and touched the wall first in the 200 IM as the Oakland women's swimming and diving team won their first dual meet of 2013 over Akron 171-122 Friday afternoon in the OU Aquatic Center.<\/p>\n
“I thought we competed well as you never know what to expect after training camp,” said head coach Pete Hovland. “We had a number of girls swim well, top to bottom, so I think we are off to a good start as they are all training hard and focused as we look to finish out 2013 in good fashion.”<\/p>\n
Czerska won the 100 and 200 fly with times of 56.50 and 2:04.88 respectively while winning the 200 IM with a time of 2:07.18. She was also a part of the winning 200 medley relay with Karin Tomeckova, Alyssa Busch and Allison Bellford with a time of 1:45.99.<\/p>\n
Tricia Grant won both diving events with a season-best score of 300.60 on the 3-meter board and a score of 297.97 on the 1-meter board. Vanessza Balogh won the 1000 and 500 freestyle events with times of 10:18.82 and 5:03.98, while Tomeckova swept the backstroke events with a time of 56.79 in the 100 back and 2:02.44 in the 200 back.<\/p>\n
Nikki Flynn was a multiple event winner as she won the 200 free with a 1:55.42 and finished first in the 100 free with a time of 53.16. Bellford captured the 50 free with a time 24.17.<\/p>\n
Both Oakland swimming and diving teams will be in action tomorrow as they travel to Cleveland, Ohio to take on Cleveland State and Xavier in a tri-meet at Robert F. Busbey Natatorium starting at 1 p.m. The Oakland men are ranked fourth in the CollegeSwimming.com Mid-Major poll while CSU is ranked 11th in the latest ranking.<\/p>\n
