NEVADA AT WASHINGTON STATE: The Washington State University women\u2019s swim team hosts the University of Nevada in a dual meet at 11 a.m., Saturday, Jan. 26 at Gibb Pool. <\/p>\n
Nevada has compiled a 9-1 record in dual meets this season, and is coming off a 143-141 victory over San Diego State. The Cougars are 1-8 all-time in dual meets against the Wolf Pack, falling by a score of 88-114 last season in Reno. The Cougars, 5-3 this season, will again compete without co-captain and top sprinter Taryn Ternent due to illness.<\/p>\n
\u201cI can assure that attitudes have changed after our last meet,\u201d WSU head coach Rocco Aceto said. \u201cAttitude is everything, and our team just needs to properly adjust it. In athletics, self-confidence always plays a big factor. Nevada is a great dual meet team, and we have yet to beat them since I have been here. Mike Schrader always has a knack of providing good coaching and preparing his teams for dual meets. Again we will not have our top sprinter, so we\u2019ve got to make up a little room there.\u201d<\/p>\n
After coming off two weeks of hard training at the Olympic Training Center over the winter vacation, the Cougars have begun to shift the focus of their training back to preparing for the Pac-10 and NCAA Championships at the end of the season. <\/p>\n
\u201cWe\u2019re starting to work more on speed and sprinting, as well as changing our weight program from a focus on strength to building more power,\u201d Aceto said. \u201cWe\u2019re really starting to gear up for championships.\u201d<\/p>\n
NEXT COMPETITION: The Cougars will play host to Pac-10 rival Oregon State in a pair of dual meets Friday, Feb. 1 at 7 p.m. and Saturday, Feb. 2 at 11 a.m. This will be WSU\u2019s last competition<\/p>\n
LAST COMPETITION: WSU dropped a pair of dual meets to host UCLA by a score of 213-49 and to Pacific 188-74, while the Bruins edged Pacific 132-130. The Cougars swam without co-captain and top sprinter Taryn Ternent due to illness.<\/p>\n
\u201cPacific prepared brilliantly for its intrastate rivalry, but UCLA pulled off a victory in the final relay,\u201d Aceto said. \u201cOur six weeks of hard training has gone well, but the long layoff from competition hurt us. We looked very flat and our attitudes were poor. We need to rebound strongly against Nevada.\u201d <\/p>\n
WSU\u2019s Jill Olson provided a solid performance, notching two top-five finishes. The junior from Seattle placed third in the 1,000 freestyle with a time of 10:23.25, and fifth in the 500 freestyle in 5:05.61.<\/p>\n
Co-captain Rachel Dong swam well for the Cougars, also grabbing top-five places in two events. Dong, a sophomore from Paramount, Calif., finished third in the 100 butterfly, clocking a 56.69, and fifth in the 100 breaststroke in 1:05.97.<\/p>\n
Junior Lindsay Henahan scored another top-five finish for Washington State, coming in fourth in the 50 freestyle at 24.35 seconds. The Rochester, N.Y., native also placed sixth in the 100 butterfly, touching in at 57.45 seconds.<\/p>\n
COUGARS RANKED IN NATIONAL TOP 50: Washington State swimmers currently hold 14 individual marks ranked in the top 50 nationally by Taper and Shave\u2019s College Quick 50. All five of the Cougar relays also rank in the NCAA top 25. <\/p>\n

COACH ROCCO ACETO: Rocco Aceto is currently in his fifth year as head coach of the WSU women\u2019s swim team. Under his direction, the Cougars have sent athletes to the NCAA Championships four years in a row, gained their first three-time NCAA All-American, garnered recognition as the second best swimming team in the nation for academics, eclipsed school records 38 times and established 101 positions in the WSU All-Time top 10 list in his four years with the team.<\/p>\n
Prior to his appointment at WSU, Aceto served for two years as the assistant coach for the men\u2019s and women\u2019s swimming programs at Auburn University.<\/p>\n
Originally from Portland, Maine, Aceto competed on the swim team at his alma mater, North Carolina State, establishing school and Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) records in the 50 freestyle and 400 and 800 freestyle relays during his collegiate career.<\/p>\n
2001-02 TEAM CAPTAINS: Among the 14 returning athletes for Washington State is a trio of talented captains, Rachel Dong, Melissa Hubley, and Taryn Ternent.<\/p>\n
\u201cWhen you put these three student-athletes together, learning to be leaders, I think we have a bright future for this team,\u201d Aceto said.<\/p>\n
Hubley, a junior from Dartmouth, Nova Scotia, Canada, comes off a season in which she broke her own school record in the 200 butterfly while placing fifth at the Pac-10 Championships, qualified for the NCAA Championships, and received the team\u2019s Most Outstanding Award. During the summer, she went on to win a gold medal in the 200-meter butterfly at the 2001 Canada Games.<\/p>\n
Dong\u2019s collegiate career got off to a fast start during her freshman year. The native of Paramount, Calif., broke the school record in the 100 butterfly and contributed to three relay teams setting WSU records at the 2001 Pac-10 Championships. Currently, she holds positions on seven Cougar top-10 lists for individual events. After the season, Dong received the team\u2019s Most Improved Award and Coach\u2019s Award.<\/p>\n
Ternent also excelled in her first year as a Cougar. The sophomore from Edenvale, South Africa smashed the school record in the 50 freestyle en route to placing eighth at the Pac-10 Championships last season, and swam on two relay teams that set WSU records. In addition, Ternent owns places on three other school top-10 lists.<\/p>\n
