{"id":329000,"date":"2018-09-13T11:41:03","date_gmt":"2018-09-13T18:41:03","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/?p=329000"},"modified":"2018-09-13T11:44:00","modified_gmt":"2018-09-13T18:44:00","slug":"2028-olympic-water-polo-venue-proposed-in-irvine","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/2028-olympic-water-polo-venue-proposed-in-irvine\/","title":{"rendered":"2028 Olympic Water Polo Venue Proposed in Irvine"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>With the Olympics coming to Los Angeles in 2028, venues are starting to be planned.<\/p>\n<p>Irvine\u2019s Great Park looks to be a strong option to host the water polo competition, the <em>Orange County Register<\/em> reports, provided USA Water Polo and the city can come together.<\/p>\n<p>A $50 million pool complex has been proposed at the Great Park, according to the <em>Register<\/em>. It would be adjacent to an ice rink that will be a practice facility of the Anaheim Ducks. It is currently under construction.<\/p>\n<p>Under the proposal, Irvine would lease property to USA Water Polo, which would pay to build and operate the facility. The city would be guaranteed a negotiated amount of time for the public to use the facility, the <em>Register<\/em> reported.<\/p>\n<p>USA Water Polo is based in Huntington Beach, California, but has plans to move its offices to Irvine next year.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere\u2019s just a lot of plusses when it comes to transportation, having great hotels, multiple airports in the area, train transit, easy driving access,\u201d and the group doesn\u2019t have a home training facility now, USA Water Polo spokesman <strong>Greg<\/strong> <strong>Mescall<\/strong> told the <em>Register<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>The city and USA Water Polo have up to five months to work out an agreement, the <em>Register<\/em> reported, which would come back to the City Council for approval.<\/p>\n<p>Read the full <em>Orange County Register<\/em> story <a href=\"https:\/\/www-ocregister-com.cdn.ampproject.org\/c\/s\/www.ocregister.com\/2018\/08\/31\/water-polo-complex-proposed-at-great-park-could-make-irvine-a-2028-olympic-venue\/amp\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">here<\/a>.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>With the Olympics coming to Los Angeles in 2028, venues are starting to be planned.
