{"id":328732,"date":"2018-09-12T14:18:51","date_gmt":"2018-09-12T21:18:51","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/?p=328732"},"modified":"2018-09-12T14:18:51","modified_gmt":"2018-09-12T21:18:51","slug":"s-2","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/s-2\/","title":{"rendered":"Lara van Niekerk Breaks CANA Africa Swimming and Open Water Championship Record"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Two gold, three silver and two bronze medals for the South African swimming team, as the third day of the 13<sup>th<\/sup> CANA Africa Swimming and Open Water Championships came to a close in Algiers <span data-term=\"goog_793809729\">tonight<\/span>, Wednesday, 12<sup>th<\/sup> September 2018.<\/p>\n<p>In the 50m breaststroke, it was <strong>Lara van Niekerk<\/strong> who came out on top with a new Championships Record time of 31.99, shedding just under a second from the 32.58 record held by<strong> Kaylene Corbett<\/strong>. <strong>Jade Simons<\/strong> won SA\u2019s second medal in the race, a bronze, finishing in 33.10, while the silver went to Zambia\u2019s Tilka Paljk in 32.15.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Jessica Whelan<\/strong> bagged yet another silver medal, this time in the 400m freestyle, clocking 4:23.76, while Egypt\u2019s <strong>Hania Moro<\/strong> walked away with the gold in 4:21.76 and Algeria\u2019s <strong>Cherouati Nafissa<\/strong> with the bronze in 4:24.42.<\/p>\n<p>Next in the water was <strong>Hannah Kiely<\/strong> in the 100m backstroke, winning a silver medal for South Africa in 1:04.53, behind Egypt\u2019s <strong>Samiha Mohsen<\/strong> in 1:04.19 and ahead of Mauritius\u2019<strong> Fahsi Hiba<\/strong> in 1:05.98.<\/p>\n<p>Kiely was also a part of the 4x100m freestyle relay team that won the gold in 3:52.63 with the help of team mates <strong>Erin Gallagher, Janie Coetzer<\/strong> and <strong>Lesley<\/strong> <strong>Blignaut<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>In a closely contested 200m backstroke, <strong>Jacques van Wyk<\/strong> finished with the silver medal in 2:05.76, while the gold was claimed by Algeria\u2019s <strong>M Bouhamidi<\/strong> in 2:05.13 and the bronze by Egypt\u2019s <strong>Mohamed Samy<\/strong> in 2:06.88.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Ayrton Sweeney, Alaric Basson, Ruan Breytenbach<\/strong> and <strong>Alard Basson<\/strong> finished off the evening with a bronze medal in the 4x200m freestyle relay, clocking 7:38.19 behind Egypt in 7:28.10 and Tunisia in 7:31.55.<\/p>\n<p>South Africa has 22 medals at the event, trailing Egypt (24).<\/p>\n<p><i>\u2014 The above press release was posted by Swimming World in conjunction with Swimming South Africa<\/i><i>.
