The South African swimming team added eight more medals to their tally (2 gold, 4 silver and 2 bronze) during the second day of the 13th<\/sup> CANA Africa Swimming and Open Water Championships in Algiers, Algeria tonight<\/span>, Tuesday, 11th<\/sup> September 2018.<\/p>\n

With a fast and golden time of 4:21.69, Ayrton Sweeney<\/strong> scooped the 400m individual medley title ahead of teammate Ruan Breytenbach<\/strong>, who grabbed the silver medal in 4:25.80. The bronze medal in the event went to Egypt\u2019s Ahmed Hamdy<\/strong> third in 4:26.73.<\/p>\n

Lara van Niekerk<\/strong> edged out the competition in the 200m breaststroke, winning the race in 2:35.25, over 3 secs ahead of Egypt\u2019s Rowida Hesham<\/strong> in 2:38.99 and Algeria\u2019s Nefsi Rania Hamida<\/strong> in 2:40.10.<\/p>\n

In the 50m butterfly, Erin Gallagher<\/strong> added a silver medal to her tally in 26.64, behind Egypt\u2019s Farida Osman<\/strong> in a new Championship Record time of 26.16 and ahead of Algeria\u2019s Melih Amel<\/strong> in 27.52.<\/p>\n

Jessica Whelan<\/strong> and Janie Coetze<\/strong>r took the second and third place on the medal podium in the 200m freestyle, clocking 2:06.14 and 2:07.08, respectively, while the gold in the event went to Egypt\u2019s Hania Moro<\/strong> in 2:04.46.<\/p>\n

Alaric Basson<\/strong> was more than happy with his bronze medal winning performance in the 50m breaststroke, touching the wall in 28.42, behind Egypt\u2019s Youssef<\/strong> Elkamash<\/strong> who grabbed the gold in a new Championship Record time of 28.04.<\/p>\n

Basson, Gallagher, Hannah Kiely<\/strong> and Jacques van Wyk<\/strong> also swam the 4x100m freestyle relay and bagged the silver medal in 3:37.06, while Egypt claimed the gold in 3:36.94 and Algeria the bronze in 3:40.39.<\/p>\n
