After retiring from collegiate swimming in 1989, she returned to the pool as a masters swimming for the Olympic Club in San Francisco. In 2006, while competing in a FINA World Masters Swimming Championship, she swam the breaststroke leg of the club\u2019s silver medal effort in the 200 Medley Relay.<\/p>\n<p>One of the best moves she made was to marry Jeff Woodhead, a Cal guy who rowed crew; this union of rivals has produced a bountiful for Laura; her sons Dylan and Quinn have perhaps wisely followed their mother\u2019s lead to The Farm, where both are valued members of the Stanford water polo team. Their daughter Ella is still fair game in the war between the Golden Bears and the Cardinal.<\/p>\n<p><em>Swimming World<\/em> caught up with Laura at the <a href=\"https:\/\/goprincetontigers.com\/news\/2018\/9\/5\/mens-water-polo-tigers-ready-to-host-2018-princeton-invitational.aspx?path=mwpolo\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Princeton Invitational<\/a>, where both her sons were on the pool deck for Stanford\u2014though Dylan was also prepping for a trip to join the U.S. Men\u2019s Senior National Team in Berlin on Tuesday for the FINA Men\u2019s Water Polo World Cup 2018.<\/p>\n<p><strong>&#8211; You\u2019re in a \u201cmixed marriage\u201d\u2014you graduated from Stanford and your husband Jeff went to Cal. Photo Courtesy: Laura Woodhead<\/p><\/div>\n<p>He was\u00a0very\u00a0disappointed\u00a0initially, especially with Dylan, because Dylan had been\u00a0mostly\u00a0a Cal kid growing up. [Jeff] said that when Dylan chose Stanford\u00a0over Cal, he felt like Hans Solo when he took the lightsaber through his body from his son [Kylo Ren] and fell off the sky bridge to his death.<\/p>\n<p>But Jeff\u2019s come around and he\u2019s finally wearing a Stanford shirt to the water polo matches. It\u2019s taken a couple of years but he\u2019s matured. I\u00a0eased\u00a0him\u00a0into it with an all-black polo [shirt] with a small red \u201cS.\u201d He\u2019s very proud that both of his sons are at Stanford now, but he may not admit it to his Cal buddies, and he&#8217;s focusing these next four years on\u00a0convincing our daughter Ella (14)\u00a0to go to Cal.<\/p>\n<p><strong>&#8211; You\u2019re a Stanford graduate who swam for their team. How proud are you to have your sons follow in your footsteps?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s super special. I feel incredibly lucky and thankful\u00a0for all of their coaches, teammates and others who have helped them along the way. They have worked\u00a0hard but to be given this opportunity\u00a0as brothers to play together at Stanford is a little overwhelming to me.\u00a0Swimming at Stanford was one of the most rewarding experience of my life.\u00a0To know they\u2019re experiencing something similar is really rewarding, especially as a parent.<\/p>\n<p><strong>&#8211; There\u2019s some bigger new for your son Dylan. He\u2019s flying to Berlin for a shot at the U.S. Senior National Team.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Yes, very\u00a0exciting times. To make the final roster for Berlin is an incredibly opportunity.\u00a0I think they are\u00a0taking 13, and 11 will suit up for each game;\u00a0[Dylan] knows to take every one of these opportunities and make the most of it. Photo Courtesy: Bryan Williams<\/p><\/div>\n<p>The fact that he gets to go with his roommate, <strong>Ben Hallock<\/strong>, is awesome.<\/p>\n<p><strong>&#8211; For such a young player Hallock is extremely accomplished.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Yes, he&#8217;s an incredibly gifted athlete. I&#8217;m equally impressed by how humble he is.\u00a0You\u2019ll find at Stanford that a lot of the great athletes are extremely humble\u2014and Ben is one of those.<\/p>\n<p><strong>&#8211; There\u2019s a mystique about Stanford from both the academic as well as the athletic sides.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>I\u2019m definitely biased but Stanford recruits\u00a0student-athletes who want to be their best in everything they do. They\u2019re hard workers, they\u2019re motivated, and there\u2019s this legacy that builds once you get there and join a team. You\u2019re surrounded by like-minded athletes that are on the same journey.<\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;m one of the many alums who are incredibly proud of the Stanford swimming program.\u00a0The program continues to grow\u00a0be more successful every year. The swimmers who are\u00a0coming through the Stanford program are incredible\u00a0student-athletes and role models.
