{"id":328435,"date":"2018-09-11T11:00:47","date_gmt":"2018-09-11T18:00:47","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/?p=328435"},"modified":"2018-09-11T10:56:06","modified_gmt":"2018-09-11T17:56:06","slug":"performance-of-the-week-chupkov-smashes-world-cup-record-in-200-breast","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/performance-of-the-week-chupkov-smashes-world-cup-record-in-200-breast\/","title":{"rendered":"Performance of the Week: Chupkov Smashes World Cup Record in 200 Breast"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This week\u2019s Performance of the Week goes to <\/span><b>Anton Chupkov <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">for his <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/anton-chupkov-crushes-world-cup-record-in-200-breast\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">World Cup record performance in the 200 breast<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in Kazan at the 2018 FINA World Cup. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Chupkov erased <\/span><b>Marco Koch\u2019s <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">2015 World Cup record of 2:08.77 with a sterling 2:07.59, just a little more than a half second off of his own Russian and European record in the event. Going out, Chupkov was actually only 4th at the 50 and second at the 100 before making a move in the second half of the race. He split an impressive 1:03.11\/1:04.48, out splitting the rest of the field by several seconds over the second 100.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Chupkov has a tendency to take his races out slow and build through the second half. When he recorded his current best time of 2:06.80 at the European Championships this summer he was out in 1:02.38, a little more than half a second faster than his opening split in Kazan. Chupkov\u2019s swim is the second fastest performance in history behind <\/span><b>Ippei Watanabe\u2019s <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">world record of 2:06.67. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dropping a 2:07-mid in September is a clear that Chupkov is not a flash in the pan: he is here to stay.
