NOTRE DAME, Ind., Jan. 19. THE University of Notre Dame men's swimming and diving team upped its dual meet record to 9-3 on Saturday afternoon with a 162.5 -133.5 victory over Oakland University at the Rolfs Aquatic Center. <\/p>\n
The Oakland matchup is the first of four consecutive home meets for the Irish, who will be back in action on Saturday, Jan. 26, against BIG EAST Conference opponent Villanova.<\/p>\n
Notre Dame and Oakland split the event victories eight-eight in the meet, but Notre Dame's depth enabled the Irish to come away with the victory.<\/p>\n
Senior co-captain Jonathan Pierce won the 1650 freestyle by over 10 seconds (16:02.44) to begin the individual events in the meet. Notre Dame's backstroke duo of senior David Horak and freshman Dean Wolf came
\nthrough in the fourth event, taking first and second place, respectively to keep the Irish in the meet.<\/p>\n
Event six swung the momentum back in Notre Dame's favor. J. R. Teddy, Lucas Wymore and Brian Coughlan combined to go one-two-three for the Irish, scoring valuable points and putting temporary control of the
\nmeet in the home team's hands.<\/p>\n
In event eight, diver Andy Maggio posted his first of two victories in the meet off the one-meter board (Maggio would also win the one-meter competition). <\/p>\n
Oakland was able to post individual victories in the 100 freestyle and 200 backstroke, but Notre Dame was able to score more crucial points in the backstroke – with Horak finishing second, Jason Colettis third, John Hudson fourth and Wolf fifth.<\/p>\n
Oakland's Mark Quinn earned a victory in the 200 breaststroke to keep his team in the hunt, but the home team suddenly decided to shut the door. J.R. Teddy (4:40.95) and Jonathan Pierce (4:41.15) finished
\none-two in the 500 freestyle, followed by a dominating team performance in the 100 butterfly. Frank Krakowski (51.24), led a group of four Irish swimmers to dominate the top four places in the 100 fly (Horak,
\nCoughlan and Lucas Wymore) and put the meet out of reach.<\/p>\n
