ALTHOUGH Olympic gold medalist Katie Ledecky certainly grabbed everyone's attention with a stunning time in the women's 1650-yard free last night at the U.S. Winter Short Course Nationals, North Carolina's Stephanie Peacock still has something to say about the distance free.<\/p>\n
Today, at the Ohio State Invitational in Columbus, Peacock knocked time off her NCAA record in the event with a 15:37.06. That swim bettered her previous record of 15:38.79 set while winning the event at NCAAs in March. The performance now stands as the fourth fastest time in history, but is much slower than the 15:28.36 turned in by Ledecky last night. <\/p>\n
She had plenty of company in the race at Florida's Jessica Thielmann (15:52.34) and Alicia Mathieu (15:59.32) each broke 16:00. Florida's Arthur Frayler won the men's 1650 free in 14:54.65, while teammates Carlos Omana (15:03.47) and Jason Taylor (15:06.55) took second and third. <\/p>\n
Florida's Elizabeth Beisel followed up her swift 4:00 in the 400 IM last night with an NCAA A cut time of 1:52.00 in the women's 200 back this evening. Stanford's Maya Dirado also beat the automatic standard with a second-place time of 1:52.52, while Florida's Sinead Russell finished just outside the cut with a 1:53.20. OSU's Steven Zimmerman won the men's 200 back in 1:42.85, while Wisconsin's Drew Teduits took second in 1:42.89. OSU's Connor McDonald wound up third in 1:43.49. <\/p>\n
Stanford's Maddy Schaefer (48.36) and Andi Murez (48.72) went 1-2 in the women's 100 free, while Florida's Ellese Zalewski earned third in 48.91. OSU's Jason Schnur topped the men's 100 free in 43.31, while Florida's Brad deBorde (43.43) and Pawel Werner (43.78) took second and third. <\/p>\n
Notre Dame's Emma Reaney remained on fire this weekend with an NCAA A cut time of 2:07.60 to win the women's 200 breast. Stanford's Katie Olsen (2:09.91) and Florida's Hilda Luthersdottir (2:11.40) completed the top three. Florida's Eduardo Solaeche Gomez (1:55.10) and Matt Elliott (1:57.72) took 1-2 in the men's 200 breast, while OSU's Dak Stone placed third in 1:58.75.<\/p>\n
North Carolina's Cari Blalock (1:56.63) and Katie Nolan (1:56.99) earned the top two spots in the women's 200 fly. OSU's Shannon Draves took third in 1:57.46. Notably, Beisel dropped a 1:56.85 to win the B final. Florida's Marcin Cieslak clocked an NCAA A cut in the men's 200 fly with a 1:42.88. Teammate Sebastien Rousseau placed second in 1:43.01, while OSU's Tamas Gercsak finished third in 1:44.55. <\/p>\n
