It has been an interesting summer to say the least.<\/p>\n<p>World records fell the way to\u00a0<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/adam-peaty-takes-down-100-breast-world-record-touches-in-57-00\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Adam Peaty<\/a>\u00a0<\/strong>and\u00a0<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/kliment-kolesnikov-takes-down-50-back-world-record-with-24-00\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Kliment Kolesnikov<\/a>\u00a0<\/strong>at the European Championships and to <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/liu-xiang-takes-down-50-back-world-record-at-asian-games-first-to-break-27-seconds\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Liu Xiang<\/a>\u00a0<\/strong>at the\u00a0Asian Games.\u00a0<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/michael-andrew-on-winning-four-national-titles-video-interview\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Michael Andrew<\/a>\u00a0<\/strong>won four national titles. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/katie-ledecky-announces-partnership-with-tyr\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Katie Ledecky<\/strong><\/a>,\u00a0<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/caeleb-dressel-officially-signs-deal-with-speedo\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Caeleb Dressel<\/a>\u00a0<\/strong>and\u00a0<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/simone-manuel-announces-deal-with-tyr-sport\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Simone Manuel<\/a>\u00a0<\/strong>all went pro.<\/p>\n<p>Dressel had an underwhelming set of taper meets and then <a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/caeleb-dressel-hurt-in-motorcycle-accident-in-june-almost-missed-nationals\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">revealed he was involved in a motorcycle accident<\/a>. Ledecky <a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/katie-ledecky-smashes-1500-free-world-record-first-night-tyr-indianapolis-pro-swim-series\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">broke a world record<\/a> in May and then didn&#8217;t go faster the rest of the summer.\u00a0<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/madisyn-cox-given-two-year-doping-suspension\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Madisyn Cox<\/a>\u00a0<\/strong>was hit with a doping violation but then <a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/madisyn-cox-declared-eligible-to-compete-after-source-for-banned-substance-fou\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">was cleared<\/a>, albeit after the U.S. Nationals.\u00a0<strong>Katinka Hosszu\u00a0<\/strong>didn&#8217;t register a time in the top eight in the world a year after winning four medals at the 2017 World Championships. Reigning World Champions\u00a0<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/2016-olympic-champion-mireia-belmonte-withdraws-from-european-championships\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Mireia Belmonte<\/a>\u00a0<\/strong>and\u00a0<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/2017-world-champion-gabriele-detti-out-of-european-championships\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Gabriele Detti<\/a>\u00a0<\/strong>sat out the European Championships to nurse injuries.<\/p>\n<p>It has been a whirlwind of a summer, which is somewhat expected. Staying at the top in this sport is hard. Four years is a long time. As one wave of swimmers leave, a new wave emerges. She became just the third swimmer to break four minutes in the final in Japan with her 3:59.66 to sit only behind Ledecky and\u00a0<strong>Federica Pellegrini\u00a0<\/strong>in the all-time rankings.<\/p>\n<p>Titmus is now tied for 10th all-time in the 200 free and eleventh in the 800. She turns 18 on September 7 and is already one of the best distance freestylers in the world. Bick<\/p><\/div>\n<p><em>Age: 18<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Country: Canada<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Virtual World Championship medals: 200 free, gold; 4&#215;200 free, bronze; 4&#215;100 free, bronze<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Canada&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Taylor Ruck\u00a0<\/strong>took the world by storm at the Commonwealth Games in April where she won eight total medals, including a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/taylor-ruck-holds-off-ariarne-titmus-for-200-free-gold-medal\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">gold in the 200 free<\/a>. Ruck then followed that up with five total medals at the Pan Pacs in August, highlighted by the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/taylor-ruck-stuns-with-200-free-gold-at-pan-pacs-katie-ledecky-bronze\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">world&#8217;s fastest time<\/a> in the 200 free, taking down the almighty\u00a0<strong>Katie Ledecky<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>Ruck <a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/world-junior-gold-medalist-taylor-ruck-verbally-commits-to-stanford\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">will be joining<\/a> Ledecky in Palo Alto at Stanford this fall where she will start her freshman year.\u00a0<strong>Greg Meehan\u00a0<\/strong>has been known to get great swimmers and make them even faster, guiding\u00a0<strong>Simone Manuel\u00a0<\/strong>and\u00a0<strong>Maya DiRado\u00a0<\/strong>to individual Olympic gold medals in 2016. Bick<\/p><\/div>\n<p><em>Age: 18<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Country: Japan<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Virtual World Championship medals: 100 fly, gold; 200 free, silver<\/em><\/p>\n<p>By the time we hit the 2020 Olympics in Tokyo, all eyes will be on the Japanese swimmers and what they can achieve in front of their home country&#8217;s fans. 18-year-old\u00a0<strong>Rikako Ikee\u00a0<\/strong>will be one of Japan&#8217;s gold medal hopes in two years. In 2018, she swam the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/rikako-ikee-rattles-56-second-barrier-in-100-fly-at-pan-pacs-moves-to-fourth-all-time\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">world&#8217;s fastest time<\/a> in the 100 fly and also produced a Pan Pac silver in the 200 free.<\/p>\n<p>Ikee was recently named the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/rikako-ikee-named-mvp-of-asian-games\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">MVP of the Asian Games<\/a>\u00a0where she won eight total medals, including six golds. But Smith is one of the best backstrokers in the United States as she will represent Team USA next summer at the World Championships in the 200 back.<\/p>\n<p>The backstroke events are pretty stacked right now with the likes of\u00a0<strong>Kylie Masse<\/strong>,\u00a0<strong>Kathleen Baker\u00a0<\/strong>and\u00a0<strong>Emily Seebohm\u00a0<\/strong>dominating the world rankings. Romanchuk is blossoming into maybe the best distance freestyler in the world.<\/p>\n<p>He is now fifth all-time in the 1500 and tenth all-time in the 800. At 26-years-old, Grothe seems almost reborn as a swimmer. He is swimming faster than ever before and is the new face of distance swimming in the United States since the retirement of\u00a0<strong>Connor Jaeger\u00a0<\/strong>two years ago.<\/p>\n<p>Grothe was the only American male swimmer to be ranked in the top ten in the world in three different events in 2018. He was as high as second in the 800 with his <a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/zane-grothe-powers-to-gold-in-800-free-jordan-wilimovsky-second\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">gold medal from Pan Pacs<\/a>\u00a0and was sixth in the 400 and 1500 with his Pan Pac times.<\/p>\n<p>Grothe has yet to make an Olympic Team and is in the driver&#8217;s seat to make that happen in two years. He showed consistency this summer by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/zane-grothe-closes-tyr-pro-series-columbus-with-win-in-800-free\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">staying undefeated<\/a> at the Pro Swim Series in the 800 across all six stops. Scott has been one of Great Britain&#8217;s rising young stars since he first made an appearance for Team Scotland at the 2014 Commonwealth Games. Flash forward four years later and Scott came away with six total medals from the 2018 Commonwealth Games in Australia, including a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/scott-duncan-claims-100-free-title-at-commonwealth-games\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">gold in the 100 free<\/a>, becoming the first ever man from Scotland to win the event.<\/p>\n<p>Scott followed that up with a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/duncan-scott-stuns-field-from-lane-eight-for-200-free-win-at-european-champs\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">gold medal in the 200 free<\/a> at the European Championships in lane eight, in front of a home crowd. His time of 1:45.34 was faster than anyone swam at any of the four major meets. His 100 free gold from Commonwealth Games (48.02) would have put him third in the Virtual World Championships behind\u00a0<strong>Kyle Chalmers\u00a0<\/strong>and\u00a0<strong>Alessandro Miressi<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>Scott is a part of a very strong British team that could challenge for gold medals in the 4&#215;200 free and 4&#215;100 medley relays over the next two major world meets. He faded badly down the stretch but Hungarian\u00a0<strong>Kristof Milak\u00a0<\/strong>won the gold medal in 1:52.79.<\/p>\n<p>But Milak lay in the water from clear exhaustion. He was shaking his head with disappointment when he saw the time. Especially since he had swum a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/kristof-milak-swims-monster-152-in-lcm-200-fly-moves-to-third-all-time\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">1:52.71 earlier in the summer<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Milak made his international debut last summer when he won the silver medal in the 100 fly in front of the raucous Hungarian crowd at World Championships with a 50.62. It was one of the fastest fields ever assembled and Milak used the home crowd to his advantage by claiming the silver.<\/p>\n<p>He did not swim the 200 at Worlds to allow European Record holder\u00a0<strong>Laszlo Cseh\u00a0<\/strong>and Olympic bronze medalist\u00a0<strong>Tamas Kenderesi\u00a0<\/strong>to take the reigns. But he did swim a 1:53.87 to win World Juniors last summer in Indianapolis, stamping himself as a legit contender in both distances.<\/p>\n<p>Milak proved 2017 was not a fluke by winning the European crown in the 200, but his expression at the end of the race showed he believes there is more in the tank.
