I Men: Cal Wins Dallas Morning News Classic

DALLAS, TX., Jan. 19. OLD King Midas had a golden touch and Cal Coach Nort Thornton's is equally as gilded.

The veteran Berkeley mentor, who guided Cal to back-to-back NCAA Championships in 1980-81, had Da Big Bad Bears on the rampage here this evening and the result was a resounding and highly impressive victory in the
20th Annual Dallas Morning News Invitational.

Led by its dynamic sprint duo of Anthony Ervin and Duje Draganja, plus soph stroke specialist Alex Lim, who won three races over the two-day competition, Cal raced to a 328-292 victory over Coach John Trembley's
Tennessee Volunteers at venerable Perkins Natatoroum.

Third was host Southern Methodist (279), which just edged Florida for the show spot. The Gators, with 275, were fourth, followed by Texas A&M (261) and Auburn (227).

Auburn's sixth-place finish is rather surprising in that Coach David's Marsh's War Eagles are regarded by many as prime contenders for this year's men's NCAA Championship title. That meet will be swum the final weeekend of March at the University of Georgia.

Cal won five of nine races here this evening, setting meet and pool records in three. On opening night they won three (50 free, 100 back, 800 free relay), setting pool and meet records in each. Cal would have set a fourth standard had not Draganja left early on the fly leg of the 400 medley relay.

So, Mr. Thornton, does this make Da Bears "locks" for the NCAA Championship?

"Hey, don't pick us. Stanford or Texas have to be the favorites," he said after his team's win. "I didn't know how well we'd swim coming in, but I was of course tremendously pleased with our showing. We responded well to the challenge and that's a good sign."

After Ervin's record-breaking 19.46 50 free win Friday, he came back tonight to win the 100 free in 43.29.

Normally that would have been good enough for both a meet and pool record as the old standards were 43.82 by SMU's Lars Frolander, Olympic gold medalist at both Sydney and last summer's World Championships in the 100 fly. However — HOWEVER — Mr. Draganja (the
"Croatian Comet") went a blazing 43.21 pr to win the consols, so he and Ervin now rank 1-2 nationally in the 100. The only active collegiate swimmers who've ever been faster (and remember: neither Ervin nor Duje were shaved or rested) are Arizona's Roland Schoeman (42.58), Cal's Matt Macedo (42.99r), Texas' Ian Crocker (43.07), Florida's Nathan Summers (43.12) and Carlos Jayme(43.27).

Ervin's pr is his 41.80 that won NCAAs last season, equaling former Golden Bear Matt Biond's American-national collegiate record.

Lim, who twice broke the meet record in the 100 back last night with his 47.62 (once leading off the relay and then in the race itself), won a tough double tonight with his victories in the 200 back (1:45.02) and 200 fly (1:46.16). Lim's backstroke pr is his nation-leading 1:43.43 from last month's Longhorn Invitational at Texas.

If Cal is to have a shot at winning NCAAs, Lim will have to score big in three finals. Juding from his performance at Austin in December and now here, that's a distinct possibility.

Cal's other wins were in the 200-400 free relays, where Da Bears turned in nation-leading 1:19.86-2:56.09 swims.

Tennessee got an outstanding performance from junior braststroker-medleyist Andrew Bree, who won the 400 IM opening night, then took the 200 breast tonight with a 2:00.06 to Florida's Ian Chadsey's 2:02.24. Third was Cal's Peter Aaronson (2:02.58).

Coach Eddie Sinnot's SMU Mustangs scored a win when senior Michael Jacobson took the 200 IM in 1:49.64. Runner-up was Cal senior Bayani Flores, who's
finally starting. Flores clocked 1:49.87 and also swam on Cal's record-setting 400-800 free relays.
Tennessee's Bree was third (1:49.89).

The 500 free went to Auburn frosh B.J. Jones (4:28.82).
It was the Tigers' sole swimming win of the meet. Auburn's Matt Bricker earlier won the 3-meter diving (395.80) over Florida's Zach Wilcox (355.46).

SMU gained a runner-up finish when Danish Olympian Jakob Anderson took second to Lim in the 200 back (1:45.02-1:45.85). Third was Tennessee's Brazilian Olympian Paulo Machado (1:46.80), who with countryman Renato Gueraldi (a 19.7/43+ sprinter), gives the Vols fine potential.

Lim's fly win came at the expense of Florida senior Duncan Sherrard, who went 1:48.58 to the former's 1:46.16. Sherrard was runner-up to Stanford's Adam Messner at last season's NCAAs (1:43.12-1:43.18) and is the fastest returning collegian. He ranks fifth and seventh, respectively, on the all-time performers-performances' list.

The meet record is 1:44.77 by former Florida State star Stephan Parry, who represented Great Britain at the Sydney Olympics.

There's nine weeks to go before NCAAs and Cal looks strong. Da Bears' next major test will come the first weekend of March at the Pac-10s, schedueld
for the Belmont Plaza Olympic Pool in Long Beach, CA.

— Bill Bell

Dallas Morning News Swimming & Diving Classic
Perkins Natatorium
DAY TWO: Jan. 19, 2002

25 yard pool

Final Team Standings

Place School Points
1 University of California 328
2 University of Tennessee 292
3 Southern Methodist University 279
4 University of Florida 275
5 Texas A&M 261
6 Auburn University 227

RESULTS

Event 10 Men 400 Yard Freestyle Relay
===============================================================================
Meet: * 2:56.09 01/19/2002 University of California
D Draganja, A Ervin, M Macedo, B Flores
Pool: ! 2:57.92 1990 U.
