Project 56: Adam Peaty Sprinting Towards Sub-57<\/h2>\n

At the European Championships in Glasgow, Great Britain\u2019s Adam Peaty<\/strong>\u2014the best sprint breaststroker in history\u2014took aim at an un\u00adfathomable boundary: swimming the men\u2019s 100 meter breast under 57 seconds.<\/p>\n

By the end of 2016, Peaty was already one of history\u2019s transcendent breaststrokers, having lowered the 100 meter breaststroke world record\u2014previously 58.46\u2014to 57.92 and then to 57.55 and finally to 57.13. That last effort won Peaty his first Olympic gold medal\u2014by more than a second-and-a-half.<\/p>\n

Peaty swims breaststroke differently than any man or woman has before him. Compared to other elite breaststrokers, his pullouts are mediocre. He emerges from the water even with the field or even behind.<\/p>\n

But then, he explodes.<\/p>\n

He has the fastest stroke rate ever among elite breaststrokers, and he\u2019s just as efficient, if not more, than any of his competitors. It\u2019s almost as though Peaty\u2019s body was constructed perfectly for sprint breaststroke.<\/p>\n

After Rio, Peaty could have looked to extend his range to the 200 breast and try to dominate that, too. But he passed on that in favor of a new mission for the 100 breast: \u201cHow far can the human body go?\u201d Peaty called this quest, \u201cProject 56.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s not about racing the best guys in the world for me,\u201d Peaty said at the 2017 World Championships in Budapest. \u201cIt\u2019s about how far can I take my body? To go 56, you\u2019re going to have to go very, very fast and train very, very hard.\u201d<\/span><\/strong><\/p><\/blockquote>\n
