The Australian Olympic Committee has today announced a move to create a Sportsmanship Award in honour of legendary 1912 Stockholm Olympic swimming gold medallist Cecil Healy<\/strong> \u2013 and it coincides with the 100th<\/sup>\u00a0anniversary of his death.<\/p>\n

On August 29th<\/sup>, 1918 Healy became the only Australian Olympic gold medallist to die in combat at the Somme in France \u2013he was 36.<\/p>\n

The Executive of the AOC will meet tomorrow to determine the details and criteria for a memorial award to be bestowed on Olympians who display exceptional sportsmanship at a Games and who uphold Olympic values.<\/p>\n

This week, the French Municipality of Assevillers will honour 2nd<\/sup>\u00a0Lt Cecil Healy and the other Australian soldiers who came to liberate the villages of that area, with a special ceremony.<\/p>\n

His death was keenly felt in the Olympic movement, not only because of his exceptional qualities as a freestyle swimmer, but particularly for the extraordinary act of sportsmanship he displayed at the 1912 Stockholm Olympics Games.<\/p>\n

Cecil Healy denied himself a certain gold medal by insisting the race favourite, the Hawaiian surfer and waterman, Duke Kahanamoku<\/strong> be allowed to compete in the 100 metres freestyle final despite the American champion missing his semi-final over a \u201cmisunderstanding over the starting time.\u201d<\/p>\n

Healy\u2019s stance eventually led to officials holding a special semi-final, which included Duke Kahanamoku, who went on to win the final with Cecil Healy taking the silver.<\/p>\n

Healy felt that without the American in the race, any gold medal would be tarnished.<\/p>\n

The young Australian also won Olympic gold for Australasia in the 4x 200m freestyle relay in Stockholm, with Malcolm Champion<\/strong> (NZ), Harold Hardwick<\/strong> and Les Boardman<\/strong>, comfortably beating the USA team that also included Duke Kahanamoku.<\/p>\n

AOC President John Coates <\/strong>AC said the example of Cecil Healy defines the Olympic spirit.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s appropriate that 100 years since Cecil was killed that we perpetuate the great example he set. His family is gathering in France this weekend for the special homage to Cecil at the war cemetery at Assevillers,\u201d Mr Coates said.<\/p>\n

\u201cThat\u2019s a wonderful gesture from the French and we believe as Australians there\u2019s a great benefit in understanding and celebrating the values that Cecil held that led to that incredible gesture in 1912. What an example he set for us all.\u201d<\/p>\n

While the Award will be considered after each Olympic Games it will only be presented if an athlete has shown exceptional sportsmanship.<\/p>\n

The move coincides with the recent book\u00a0CECIL HEALY: A BIOGRAPHY<\/strong>, co-written by 1956 and 1960 Olympic gold medallist, former Swimming Australia president John Devitt<\/strong> with Larry Writer<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Healy was at the forefront of Australia\u2019s first great era of swimming, Australia\u2019s early Olympic experiences and the rise of the surf lifesaving movement.<\/p>\n

He was also an evocative journalist and hard working administrator who helped organise the famous visit of The Duke to Australia in 1915, an adventure that inspired a generations of Australian watermen.<\/p>\n

But it was Healy\u2019s gesture on the pooldeck in Stockholm in 1912, that cost him individual Olympic gold, but earned him a place in sport\u2019s pantheon of true champions \u2013 the ultimate act of sportsmanship that has led to an\u00a0\u00a0Award that will provide an everlasting legacy to one of swimming\u2019s Olympic greats.<\/p>\n

In researching the book, Devitt and co-author Writer visited Healy\u2019s grave in France last year.<\/p>\n

Devitt himself an elite young swimmer and Manly resident on Sydney\u2019s northern beaches where Healy once lived, and as a noted swimming historian, Devitt became engrossed in the Healy legend.<\/p>\n

The book became a labour of love with Devitt saying: \u201cOur quest was exhaustive,\u201d he said of the research and writing process. \u201cCecil Healy derserves no less\u2026..\u201d<\/p>\n
