PARIS, Jan 19. CHINA's Luo Xuejuan took back the 50 meter breaststroke mark she had formerly shared, when she clocked 30.47 seconds for the event on the second day of the World Cup VII meet in Paris today.<\/p>\n
Luo, 17, lowered the mark of 30.51 set by Britain's Zoe Baker on Jan. 15 in Imperia. In December, Luo, her teammate Li Wei, and Baker all shared in the world mark at 30.56. On January 4, Baker lowered the standard to 30.54, before she took it down to 30.51 four days ago.<\/p>\n
In Paris today, Baker was second in 30.71, while the USA's Amanda Beard was third (31.22).<\/p>\n
In other women's events, Slovakia's Martina Moravcova just kept rolling winning three more events: the 100 free (53.90), 100 IM (1:00.88) and 50 fly (26.55). In the fly, she was pushed by Israeli teenager Vered Borchovski, whose 26.93 was a national record.<\/p>\n
ASmanda Beard, who was third in the 50 breast and 100 IM, won impressively in the 200 breaststroke, as her 2:22.89 was two-and-a-half seconds ahead of second-place Brooke Hanson of Australia.<\/p>\n
Costa Rica's Claudia Poll took the 400 free (4:05.98),
\nDanish veteran mette Jacobsen won the 200 fly (2:07.78) and Canada's Jennifer Carroll nipped France's laure Manaudou by a hundredth of a second to take the 100 back (1:00.39).<\/p>\n
In men's highlights, Holland's Olympic champion Pieter van den Hoogenband took the 200 free in 1:44.49, but he was pushed all the way by Canada's Rick Say, who set a national record 1:44.78.<\/p>\n
The Ed Moses\/Roman Sloudnov matchup in the 100 breast failed to produce a world record, but Sloudnov won in European record time, 58.08, just ahead of Moses at 58.22 — the second and third fastesat times in history. Moses owns the world mark at 57.66. Canada's Morga Knabe set a national record of 59.34 in finishing third.<\/p>\n
The USA's Jason Lezak added to his 100 meter victory yesterday by taking the 50 today in 21.64 seconds. World record-holder Mark Foster tied for second with Poland's Bart Kizierowski, 7-hunderedths back.<\/p>\n
Australia's Geoff Huegill won the 100 fly in 51.55,
\nwhile Croatia's Ante Maskovic took the 50 back in 24.69. South Korea's Sung Min was second in an Asian record 24.86.<\/p>\n
Min won the 200 back in a national record 1:54.65, edging Israel's aYoav Gath, whose 1:54.94 was also a national mark.<\/p>\n
In the 200 IM, France's Xavier Marchand just out-touched the USA's Ron Karnaugh, winning by 5-hundredths in 1:57.92. In four World Cup races this past week, Karnaugh has finished second four times.
\nToday, Russia Sergey Prokhorov was third in a national record 1:58:25.<\/p>\n
