WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. \u2013 The Purdue women\u2019s swim team will head to Bloomington for the annual IU vs. Purdue swim meet on Saturday, Jan. 19 at Counsilman-Billingsley Aquatics Center. The Boilermakers are ranked 21st in the nation, while the Hoosiers are ranked 20th. The meet will also mark the first annual match-up for the Titan Series, sponsored by Keebler. <\/p>\n
For the Titan Series, the Boilermakers will look to take a half-point lead over the Hoosiers in the year-long competition, after the women\u2019s basketball team claimed another half point for the Purdue side on Thursday night. After the diving portion of the meet held previously at the Boilermaker Aquatic Center, Purdue owns a 20-18 advantage over the Hoosiers, as senior Kara Hajek-Gustafson swept both the 1- and 3-meter events, while setting Holloway Pool records on both boards.<\/p>\n
"We\u2019re very excited for this meet and I think that\u2019s good," said Purdue head women\u2019s coach Cathy Wright-Eger. "All week long in practice, we\u2019ve seen that the women are ready for the challenge. Indiana\u2019s ranked 20th, we\u2019re 21st and it\u2019s IU vs. Purdue. This is what it\u2019s all about.<\/p>\n
"We\u2019ve really felt that it\u2019s a good sign that the women are not scared or nervous; they\u2019ve been ready for hard work and they\u2019re really looking at the whole picture and thinking big. Ultimately, we\u2019re still working toward the Big Ten Championships."<\/p>\n
The Boilermaker women have a lot to be happy about heading to Bloomington, as they take a 20-18 point advantage after Jan. 11\u2019s diving competition. With Hajek-Gustafson\u2019s performance, it marks the first time that a Purdue diver has taken both the 1- and 3-meter boards over a Hoosier diver. <\/p>\n
Other races to watch will be the 100 and 200 backstrokes, as Purdue\u2019s Lisa Dolansky and Indiana\u2019s Susan Woessner will go neck-and-neck for the tops of the Big Ten. In the most recent rankings, Dolansky and Woessner are tied for seventh in the nation with exactly the same time.<\/p>\n
Also leading the way for Purdue will be junior breaststroker Lindsay Lange. Lange should contribute with big scores in the 100 and 200 breast, as well as on the 400 medley relay team.<\/p>\n
