CHRISTIANBURG, Virginia, November 16. SOUTH Carolina's Michael Flach continued his impressive meet at the Hokie Invitational with a strong swim in the 200 freestyle, while teammate Amanda Rutqvist also put up a fast time in the 100 breaststroke.<\/p>\n
Flach, a junior who posted the fastest 500 freestyle yesterday, won the 200 free with a 1:35.86, the second-fastest time so far in the collegiate season. Clay Youngquist still holds the top time with a 1:35.26. Placing second in the race Virginia Tech's Owen Burns with a 1:37.86, while Virginia Tech's Lucas Bureau took third with a 1:40.20.<\/p>\n
Rutqvist, a 2011 NCAA finalist in the 100 breast, put up a great in-season time today with a 1:00.91, so far the seventh-fastest collegiate swim of the season, with second through sixth in the rankings all posting 1:00 swims. Second in the race was Virginia Tech's Alyssa Bodin with a 1:01.48, while Liberty's Emilie Kaufman placed third with a 1:01.85.<\/p>\n
The session started with the 200 medley relays, and Virginia Tech won both of them. The women took the title with a 1:40.49, while the men were victorious with a 1:28.00.<\/p>\n
In the women's 400 individual medley, Rachael Schaffer of South Carolina won with a 4:16.25, while Laura Simon took second with a 4:19.22. Abby Galbreath placed third in 4:21.99.<\/p>\n
Virginia Tech took the top three spots in the men's 400 IM, with William Nicely winning with a 3:53.91, followed by Alex Lutterbein's 3:54.08 and Morgan Latimer's 3:57.36.<\/p>\n
Heather Savage kept the Virginia Tech winning streak going, obliterating the field in the women's 100 fly with a 53.52. Jess Reinhardt of Liberty was second with a 55.33, and Casey Papp of South Carolina finished third with a 55.62.<\/p>\n
Virginia Tech went 1-2 in the women's 200 freestyle as Gabriel Bishop touched in 1:50.13, just ahead of teammate Emily Ryczek's 1:50.67. Connecticut's Jordan Bowen was third with a 1:51.05.<\/p>\n
Graham Kauffman won the men's 100 breast with a 55.58. Virginia Tech swimmers tied for second, as Emmett Dignan and Nathan Hoisington swam identical times of 56.23.<\/p>\n
Heather Savage led a Virginia Tech 1-2-3-4-5 finish, winning the women's 100 back title with a 54.24, while Holly Harper took second with a 55.60. Sabrina Benson took third with a 55.95, while Tech rounded out with Brittany Boone in fourth with a 55.97 and Katie Gillespie fifth in 56.90.<\/p>\n
South Carolina finished the session with a win in the men's 800 free relay, posting a 6:34.01. Virginia Tech took second with a 6:37.15, while the Tech “B” team took third with a 6:43.40.<\/p>\n
