The first morning of the 2018 Junior Pan Pacific Swimming Championships from Fiji was almost like an American intrasquad meet. The United States will have every top seed tonight for finals and every second seed except one. This could be a record setting medal haul for the Americans.<\/p>\n
A meet record has already fallen to the likes of team captain\u00a0Phoebe Bacon<\/strong> in the 100 back. She became the first swimmer at the meet to break a minute in the 100 back, lowering the old record that was held by Australian\u00a0Minna Atherton\u00a0<\/strong>from 2016.<\/p>\n Gianluca Urlando\u00a0<\/strong>also had a big morning with his 200 fly.\u00a0Drew Kibler<\/strong>, Destin Lasco<\/strong>,\u00a0Claire Tuggle\u00a0<\/strong>and\u00a0Olivia Carter\u00a0<\/strong>are the other top seeds for tonight’s finals.<\/p>\n The finals will start at 1 a.m. EST.<\/p>\n This meet is a great glimpse of what the future of swimming in the United States, Australia, Canada and Japan will look like and you can read about our revisit to the 2014 meet here<\/a>.<\/p>\n Heat Sheets<\/a> The Americans have the top two seeds for the 200 free final with\u00a014-year-old\u00a0Claire Tuggle\u00a0<\/strong>(1:59.36) and 18-year-old\u00a0Isabel Ivey\u00a0<\/strong>(1:59.69) breaking two minutes in the heats to start off the Junior Pan Pacific Swimming Championships. The third swimmer to break two minutes was Australian\u00a0Lani Pallister\u00a0<\/strong>(1:59.75) who will be the third seed for the finals.<\/p>\n Tuggle is still chasing the NAG record for the 13-14 age group at 1:58.53 from\u00a0Sippy Woodhead\u00a0<\/strong>back in 1978. Tuggle’s best time is a 1:58.59 from Nationals earlier this summer. Ivey’s best time is a 1:58.94 from the Junior Pan Pacs in 2016.<\/p>\n The rules for Junior Pan Pacs are the same as they are in the senior meet as the top two swimmers from each country will represent them in the final. Each country can enter as many swimmers as they want but only two are allowed to swim in the A-Final.<\/p>\n Japan’s\u00a0Nagisa Ikemoto\u00a0<\/strong>(2:00.32), Australia’s\u00a0Eliza King\u00a0<\/strong>(2:00.98), New Zealand’s\u00a0Erika Fairweather\u00a0<\/strong>(2:02.11), Canada’s\u00a0Ainsley McMurray\u00a0<\/strong>(2:02.97) and Japan’s\u00a0Miyu Namba\u00a0<\/strong>(2:03.01) also qualified for the A-Final.<\/p>\n The Americans have the top two seeds in the men’s 200 free as well with team captain\u00a0Drew Kibler\u00a0<\/strong>on top at 1:48.37.\u00a0Jake Magahey\u00a0<\/strong>is the second seed at 1:48.65 as they were the only A-finalists under 1:50 in the prelim heats.<\/p>\n Kibler was a little off his best time of 1:47.74 from Nationals this summer, but Magahey lowered his best time from a 1:49.45 from Nationals.<\/p>\n The Americans had two other swimmers under 1:50 in the heats in\u00a0Carson Foster\u00a0<\/strong>(1:49.07) and\u00a0Dare Rose\u00a0<\/strong>(1:49.65), but they will swim in the B-Final since only two per country can swim in the A-Final. But the United States’ 4×200 free relay is looking pretty good for tomorrow night.<\/p>\n New Zealand’s\u00a0Zac Reid\u00a0<\/strong>(1:50.06) is the third seed while Japan’s\u00a0Keisuke Ishizaki\u00a0<\/strong>(1:50.13) is fourth.<\/p>\n Japan’s\u00a0Taikan Tanaka\u00a0<\/strong>(1:505), Australia’s\u00a0Ashton Brinkworth\u00a0<\/strong>(1:50.97),\u00a0Silas Harris\u00a0<\/strong>(1:51.32) and Canada’s\u00a0Justin Konik\u00a0<\/strong>(1:52.64) also qualified for the A-Final.<\/p>\n American\u00a0Phoebe Bacon\u00a0<\/strong>was the only one to break a minute in the 100 back heats on Thursday morning at the Junior Pan Pacific Swimming Championships in Fiji. Bacon is well ahead of the rest of the field with her 59.72 morning swim. Bacon broke the meet record as she was the first swimmer to break a minute in the 100 back at the Junior Pan Pac meet, breaking\u00a0Minna Atherton’s\u00a0<\/strong>meet record of 1:00.45 from 2016.<\/p>\n Bacon is ahead of\u00a0Katharine Berkoff\u00a0<\/strong>and\u00a0Lucie Nordmann\u00a0<\/strong>(1:00.30) from the United States who tied for second. Only two swimmers per country can swim in the final so it is unclear who will be the second American in the final behind Bacon.<\/p>\n Bacon was a little off her best time of 59.12 from Nationals earlier this summer while Berkoff (59.77) and Nordmann (1:00.16) also added from their personal bests.<\/p>\n The other two Americans finished ahead of the next fastest swimmer as\u00a0Alex Walsh\u00a0<\/strong>(1:00.56) will swim in the B-Final and\u00a0Isabelle Stadden\u00a0<\/strong>(1:00.60) will not have a chance to swim again. This shows how deep the United States is currently in backstroke.<\/p>\n The rest of the final will be Canada’s\u00a0Madison Broad\u00a0<\/strong>(1:01.79),\u00a0Maude Boily-Dufour\u00a0<\/strong>(1:02.36), New Zealand’s\u00a0Gina Galloway\u00a0<\/strong>(1:02.66), Australia’s\u00a0Tahlia Thornton\u00a0<\/strong>(1:03.02), Japan’s\u00a0Hikaru Yamasaki\u00a0<\/strong>(1:03.09) and China’s\u00a0Li Tianyao\u00a0<\/strong>(1:03.62).<\/p>\n For the fourth event in a row, the Americans have the top two seeds with\u00a0Destin Lasco\u00a0<\/strong>(55.57) and Adam Chaney\u00a0<\/strong>(55.89) sitting on top of the heats of the 100 back on the first morning of the Junior Pan Pacific Championships in Fiji. Lasco was slightly off his best of 55.52 from Nationals but he will have a chance to go faster tonight. Chaney broke 56 for the first time with his swim as he was a 56.02 from Nationals.<\/p>\n The next two Americans also broke 56 but they will have to swim in the B-Final as Tim Connery\u00a0<\/strong>(55.94) and\u00a0Peter Larson\u00a0<\/strong>(55.98) swam lifetime bests in the heats.<\/p>\n Canada’s Tyler Wall\u00a0<\/strong>(56.15) had a big drop to get the third seed as he could play spoiler in the American party. Japan’s\u00a0Daiki Yanagawa\u00a0<\/strong>(56.61), Australia’s\u00a0Stuart Swinburn\u00a0<\/strong>(57.02),\u00a0Lewis Blackburn\u00a0<\/strong>(57.06), Canada’s\u00a0Cole Pratt\u00a0<\/strong>(57.15) and Japan’s\u00a0Riku Matsu<\/strong>yama\u00a0<\/strong>(57.16) will round out the A-Final tonight.<\/p>\n The meet record doesn’t look to be challenged as\u00a0Jack Conger\u00a0<\/strong>set that back in 2012 at 54.07 in his backstroke days.<\/p>\n Olivia Carter\u00a0<\/strong>of the United States and\u00a0Karin Takemura\u00a0<\/strong>are the top two seeds for the 200 fly final as this was the first event that a non-American placed in the top two in the prelims at the Junior Pan Pacific Swimming Championships. Carter posted a 2:10.39 and Takemura is second at 2:10.70 as they are the only two under 2:11 in the heats.<\/p>\n The other American in the final will be\u00a0Lillie Nordmann\u00a0<\/strong>(2:11.43) who was a little off her seed time. Japan came to play in the 200 fly as\u00a0Mana Naito\u00a0<\/strong>(2:11.72) is the fourth seed.<\/p>\n The Americans didn’t dominate the women’s 200 fly like every other event with\u00a0Lindsay Looney\u00a0<\/strong>(2:11.98) getting the B-Final spot just ahead of Japan’s\u00a0Chiho Mizuguchi\u00a0<\/strong>(2:12.25).<\/p>\n The rest of the A-Final was a ways back behind the top four with China’s\u00a0Liu Jing\u00a0<\/strong>(2:13.98), Australia’s\u00a0Kara Svenson\u00a0<\/strong>(2:14.28),\u00a0Michaela Ryan\u00a0<\/strong>(2:14.28) and Canada’s\u00a0Victoria Kwan\u00a0<\/strong>(2:15.69) getting in the final.<\/p>\n The Americans showed off their impressive depth once again in the men’s 200 fly with\u00a0Gianluca Urlando\u00a0<\/strong>(1:56.37) and\u00a0Van Mathias\u00a0<\/strong>(1:56.89) moving on to the A-Final. The 200 fly field in the United States is very crowded right now with a number of guys going 1:55’s and 1:56’s this summer. Although they still have some work to do with Hungary’s\u00a0Kristof Milak\u00a0<\/strong>on top of the world rankings with a 1:52.71 from earlier in the year.<\/p>\n Urlando shocked everybody when the junior to be in high school finished third in the 200 fly at Nationals and almost qualified for the senior Pan Pac team. His time this morning was faster than what\u00a0Justin Wright\u00a0<\/strong>and\u00a0Jack Conger\u00a0<\/strong>swam in the finals at Pan Pacs, so Urlando is definitely one to watch for the next couple years.<\/p>\n Mathias also had a very good swim, lowering his personal best from a 1:58.68. Mathias dropped almost two full seconds. Both Americans have a chance to take down\u00a0Andrew Seliskar’s\u00a0<\/strong>meet record of 1:55.92 from 2014.<\/p>\n The next two Americans under two minutes were\u00a0Sterling Crane\u00a0<\/strong>(1:59.79) and\u00a0Dare Rose\u00a0<\/strong>(1:59.83) as no other swimmers in the heats broke two minutes.<\/p>\n Japan’s best were\u00a0Aito Yamaguchi\u00a0<\/strong>(2:00.36) and\u00a0Tomoru Honda\u00a0<\/strong>(2:00.44) as they are seeded third and fourth for the final tonight.<\/p>\n Canada’s\u00a0Cole Pratt\u00a0<\/strong>(2:02.15), Australia’s\u00a0Shaun Champion\u00a0<\/strong>(2:02.92), New Zealand’s\u00a0Lochlainn O’Connor\u00a0<\/strong>(2:03.25) and Canada’s\u00a0Joshua Liendo\u00a0<\/strong>(2:05.55) round out the rest of the A-Final.<\/p>\n The first morning of the 2018 Junior Pan Pacific Swimming Championships from Fiji was almost like an American intrasquad meet.
