{"id":326588,"date":"2018-08-22T12:48:09","date_gmt":"2018-08-22T19:48:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/?p=326588"},"modified":"2018-08-22T15:25:18","modified_gmt":"2018-08-22T22:25:18","slug":"mark-schubert-former-u-s-coach-assisting-china-at-asian-games","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/mark-schubert-former-u-s-coach-assisting-china-at-asian-games\/","title":{"rendered":"Mark Schubert, Former U.S. Coach, Assisting China At Asian Games"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Mark Schubert<\/strong> is back on the pool deck, this time wearing the flag of a different country.<\/p>\n<p>The former U.S. national swim team coach is working for the Chinese team in what he calls a year as a part-time adviser, according to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thenewstribune.com\/news\/nation-world\/article217127655.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">The News Tribune<\/a> and The Associated Press.<\/p>\n<p>Schubert was let go as U.S. national coach in 2010 when he and <strong>Chuck Wielgus<\/strong>, USA Swimming&#8217;s Executive Director, had a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/mark-schubert-speaks-publicly-about-termination-as-usa-swimming-national-team-head-coach-says-executive-director-wanted-him-on-the-job-until-2020-updated-with-press-conference-video\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">dispute over Schubert&#8217;s job performance.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It&#8217;s feels strange, very strange,&#8221; Schubert told The Associated Press on Wednesday at the Asian Games.<\/p>\n<p>Schubert took over the head coach position with the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/mark-schubert-mission-viejo\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Mission Viejo Nadadores in 2016<\/a> and was instrumental in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/mission-viejos-marguerite-aquatics-center-approved-for-10-million-in-renovations\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">renovation<\/a> of that iconic facility.<\/p>\n<p>Schubert told the AP his current deal ends after the Asian Games. It might continue. &#8220;It&#8217;s up to them,&#8221; he told the AP. \u201dYou know there is some pretty good money involved,&#8221; he said, declining to say how much. &#8220;It feels funny, but you know I was kicked to the curb when I was fired as head national team coach.
