The fourth night of finals from the 2018 Asian Games from Jakarta, Indonesia, saw three Games Records fall from\u00a0Joseph Schooling<\/strong>,\u00a0Yasuhiro Koseki\u00a0<\/strong>and Japan’s 4×100 free relay. China’s mixed medley relay also set a Games Record since it was the first time the event was contested at the meet.<\/p>\n

Japan won four total gold medals with Koseki,\u00a0Natsumi Sakai\u00a0<\/strong>and\u00a0Daiya Seto\u00a0<\/strong>hearing their national anthem, while China had three golds from their mixed medley relay and\u00a0Li Bingjie\u00a0<\/strong>and\u00a0Zhang Yufei<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Schooling became the first gold medalist in swimming in 2018 not from China or Japan as Singapore was able to hear its national anthem at the pool for the first time.<\/p>\n

Men’s 100 Fly<\/h3>\n

Singapore’s\u00a0Joseph Schooling\u00a0<\/strong>successfully defended his Asian Games gold medal on Wednesday night in Jakarta with a new Games Record in the 100 fly. Schooling swam a 51.04 to become the fourth fastest man in the world for the 2018 Virtual World Championships. Schooling is not up to where he was two summers ago at the Olympics when he became the first man from Singapore to win an Olympic gold medal but he is consistently one of the best butterflyers in the world.<\/p>\n

Schooling had pressure from China’s\u00a0Li Zhuhao\u00a0<\/strong>who won the silver medal at 51.46. Li just missed the virtual top eight with his time. Japan’s\u00a0Yuki Kobori\u00a0<\/strong>won the bronze medal with a 51.77.<\/p>\n

Schooling won Singapore’s seventh gold medal in men’s swimming at the Asian Games with that swim. He is also just the second man to repeat in the 100 fly at this meet since Japan’s\u00a0Takashi Yamamoto\u00a0<\/strong>won three straight from 1998-2006.<\/p>\n

Singapore’s\u00a0Zheng Quah\u00a0<\/strong>(52.54), Kazakhstan’s\u00a0Adilbek Mussin\u00a0<\/strong>(52.95), Japan’s\u00a0Nao Horomura\u00a0<\/strong>(53.00), Korea’s\u00a0Chang Gyucheol\u00a0<\/strong>(53.32) and Indonesia’s\u00a0Glenn Sutanto\u00a0<\/strong>(53.89) also placed in the top eight.<\/p>\n

      Women’s 200 Free<\/h3>\n

      China’s\u00a0Li Bingjie\u00a0<\/strong>won her first title of the weekend in the 200 free with a 1:56.74 on Wednesday night in Jakarta. Li went 1-2 with teammate\u00a0Yang Junxuan\u00a0<\/strong>who got the silver with a 1:57.48, just ahead of Japan’s\u00a0Chihiro Igarashi\u00a0<\/strong>(1:57.49).<\/p>\n

      Li and Yang are both 16-years-old and big stars in the making for China. Li is already a star as she is coming off a summer where she won three medals at the 2017 World Championships. Her 2018 campaign has not been as strong but she was able to win gold in the 200 free, an off event, and place just outside the top eight in the Virtual World Championships with her time.<\/p>\n

      Li also continued China’s streak in this event as the Chinese have now won seven of the last eight Asian Games gold medals in the 200 free. Li joins the likes of\u00a0Zhuang Yong\u00a0<\/strong>(1990),\u00a0Le Ying\u00a0<\/strong>(1994),\u00a0Yang Yu\u00a0<\/strong>(2002),\u00a0Pang Jiaying\u00a0<\/strong>(2006),\u00a0Zhu Qianwei\u00a0<\/strong>(2010) and\u00a0Shen Duo\u00a0<\/strong>(2014) as Chinese winners in this event.<\/p>\n

      Japan’s Yui Ohashi\u00a0<\/strong>(2:00.29),\u00a0Thailand’s\u00a0Natthanan Junkrajang\u00a0<\/strong>(2:01.67), Hong Kong’s\u00a0Camille Cheng\u00a0<\/strong>(2:01.95), Thailand’s\u00a0Kornkarnjana Sapianchai\u00a0<\/strong>(2:01.96) and the Philippine’s\u00a0Jasmine Alkhaldi\u00a0<\/strong>(2:03.24) also swam in the final.<\/p>\n

          Men’s 100 Breast<\/h3>\n

          Japan’s\u00a0Yasuhiro Koseki\u00a0<\/strong>won his second gold medal of the meet, this time taking out the 100 breaststroke games record after he earlier won the\u00a0200 breast final<\/a>. Koseki swam a 58.86 to break the Games Record that was a 59.92 by\u00a0Dmitriy Balandin\u00a0<\/strong>coming into the meet. Balandin was the defending champion from 2014 and he ended up winning the bronze medal at 59.39, just behind China’s\u00a0Yan Zibei\u00a0<\/strong>(59.31).<\/p>\n

          Koseki was just the third man to break 58 seconds at a major meet this summer as he will settle for the virtual bronze medal behind the British duo of\u00a0Adam Peaty\u00a0<\/strong>and\u00a0James Wilby<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

          Yan and Balandin also placed in the virtual world championship final with their times here. This comes after Balandin announced earlier in the week he was thinking about retiring<\/a>\u00a0after the Asian Games were done. Balandin cited injuries for keeping him out of the 200 breast final in which he was the defending Asian Games champion and reigning Olympic champion. Balandin is 23.<\/p>\n

          Japan’s\u00a0Ippei Watanabe\u00a0<\/strong>(1:00.15), China’s\u00a0Qin Haiyang\u00a0<\/strong>(1:00.24), Korea’s\u00a0Moon Jaekwon\u00a0<\/strong>(1:01.07), Uzbekistan’s\u00a0Vladislav Mustafin\u00a0<\/strong>(1:01.49) and Singapore’s\u00a0Chien Khoo\u00a0<\/strong>(1:01.74) also placed in the final.<\/p>\n

          Koseki also won Japan’s eleventh gold medal in the 100 breast at the Asian Games. He joins the likes of\u00a0Masaru Ota\u00a0<\/strong>(1958),\u00a0Kenji Ishikawa\u00a0<\/strong>(1962, 1966),\u00a0Nobutaka Taguchi\u00a0<\/strong>(1970, 1974),\u00a0Shigehiro Takahashi\u00a0<\/strong>(1978),\u00a0Akira Hayashi\u00a0<\/strong>(1994),\u00a0Kosuke Kitajima\u00a0<\/strong>(2002, 2006) and\u00a0Ryo Tateishi\u00a0<\/strong>(2010) as Japanese winners in this event.<\/p>\n

              Women’s 200 Fly<\/h3>\n

              China’s\u00a0Zhang Yufei\u00a0<\/strong>won China’s third straight gold medal in the 200 fly at the Asian Games with a 2:06.61. Zhang’s time would be the second fastest time of any of the major meets. A lot of big names like\u00a0Mireia Belmonte\u00a0<\/strong>and\u00a0Katinka Hosszu\u00a0<\/strong>have been off their game this summer so that has opened the door for more swimmers like Zhang and Great Britain’s\u00a0Alys Thomas\u00a0<\/strong>to shine.<\/p>\n

              Zhang’s time was not the second fastest of the year as American\u00a0Hali Flickinger\u00a0<\/strong>was a 2:05 at US Nationals but only managed a 2:07.35 at Pan Pacs.<\/p>\n

              Zhang was more than two full seconds ahead of the Japanese duo of\u00a0Sachi Mochida\u00a0<\/strong>(2:08.72) and\u00a0Suzuka Hasegawa\u00a0<\/strong>(2:08.80) as both swimmers swam slower than they did at Pan Pacs earlier this month. Korea’s\u00a0An<\/strong> Sehyeon<\/strong>,\u00a0who had a breakout 2017, finished off the podium in 2:08.83. She was fourth at Worlds last summer with a 2:06.<\/p>\n

              Singapore’s\u00a0Jing Quah\u00a0<\/strong>finished fifth at 2:12.01. She is the reigning SEC champion in this event as she is about to be a sophomore at Texas A&M.<\/p>\n

              China’s\u00a0Yu Liuyan\u00a0<\/strong>(2:12.61), Vietnam’s\u00a0Le Thao\u00a0<\/strong>(2:13.93) and Indonesia’s\u00a0Adinda Dewi\u00a0<\/strong>(2:14.54) also placed in the top eight.<\/p>\n

              This is also China’s fifth gold medal in the 200 fly at the Asian Games as Zhang joins the likes of\u00a0Wang Xiaohong\u00a0<\/strong>(1990),\u00a0Liu Limin\u00a0<\/strong>(1994) and\u00a0Jiao Liuyang\u00a0<\/strong>(2010, 2014) as winners in the event for China.<\/p>\n

                  Men’s 400 IM<\/h3>\n

                  The Japanese superstar duo of\u00a0Daiya Seto\u00a0<\/strong>and\u00a0Kosuke Hagino\u00a0<\/strong>put on a show in the 400 IM final on Wednesday night in Jakarta.\u00a0<\/strong>Both swimmers went faster than they did at Pan Pacs earlier in the month when they were racing their American rival\u00a0Chase Kalisz<\/strong>. Kalisz’s gold medal time from Tokyo will hold up as the best time in the world, but Seto and Hagino sit right behind him in the virtual World Championship final.<\/p>\n

                  Seto swam a 4:08.79 to Hagino’s 4:10.30 on Wednesday at the Asian Games. China’s\u00a0Wang Shun\u00a0<\/strong>finished in third place for the bronze at 4:12.31, also placing in the top eight for Virtual Worlds for this year. Hagino was the defending champion and will keep his Games Record of 4:07.75 from 2014.<\/p>\n

                  Seto and Hagino are both favorites to take home medals in two years for the Tokyo Olympics as Hagino is the reigning Olympic Champion and Seto has been one of the most consistent performers on the world stage since winning the World title in 2013.<\/p>\n

                  China’s\u00a0Wang Yizhe\u00a0<\/strong>(4:19.61), Korea’s\u00a0Joo Jaegu\u00a0<\/strong>(4:20.77), Vietnam’s\u00a0Kim Nguyen\u00a0<\/strong>(4:22.86), Taipei’s\u00a0Choo Chengchi\u00a0<\/strong>(4:23.18) and Korea’s Kim Minsuk\u00a0<\/strong>(4:23.39) also swam in the final.<\/p>\n

                  This is also Japan’s 12th gold medal in the 400 IM at the Asian Games as they have won every gold medal contested except for two when Thailand’s\u00a0Ratapong Sirisanont\u00a0<\/strong>won in 1994 and China’s\u00a0Wu Peng\u00a0<\/strong>won in 2002.<\/p>\n

                      Women’s 100 Back<\/h3>\n

                      Japan got a 1-2 finish out of 17-year-old\u00a0Natsumi Sakai\u00a0<\/strong>(59.27) and 22-year-old\u00a0Anna Konishi\u00a0<\/strong>(59.67) in the 100 back final on Wednesday night at the 2018 Asian Games in Jakarta. Sakai swam faster than she did at Pan Pacs earlier in the month as she put herself in the top eight for the Virtual World Championships this year.<\/p>\n

                      Sakai is one of Japan’s stars for the future as they have a young women’s team that could be dangerous come two years from now at the Olympics in their home country. Sakai was the World Junior Champion last summer in the 50 back and the 17-year-old is a part of a young core of teenage backstrokers with American\u00a0Regan Smith\u00a0<\/strong>and Australian\u00a0Kaylee McKeown<\/strong>\u00a0that could do damage in the next few years.<\/p>\n

                      China’s\u00a0Chen Jie\u00a0<\/strong>(1:00.28) finished in third with the bronze medal, shutting out defending champion\u00a0Fu Yuanhui\u00a0<\/strong>of China. Fu was fourth at 1:00.35.<\/p>\n

                      Korea’s\u00a0Im Dasol\u00a0<\/strong>(1:01.08), Hong Kong’s\u00a0Kwan Wong\u00a0<\/strong>(1:02.12), Korea’s\u00a0Shin Youngyeon\u00a0<\/strong>(1:02.84) and Uzbekistan’s\u00a0Yulduz Kuchkarova\u00a0<\/strong>(1:03.21) also placed in the final.<\/p>\n

                          Men’s 4×100 Free Relay<\/h3>\n

                          Japan won its third relay of the meet out of the four that have been contested to this point. Japan’s men’s 4×100 free relay team of\u00a0Shinri Shioura\u00a0<\/strong>(48.85),\u00a0Katsuhiro Matsumoto\u00a0<\/strong>(47.65),\u00a0Katsumi Nakamura\u00a0<\/strong>(48.08) and\u00a0Juran Mizohata\u00a0<\/strong>(48.10) broke the Games Record with a 3:12.68, lowering the old record of 3:13.47 by China from 2014.<\/p>\n

                          China finished second here at 3:13.29, also under their old Games Record. The team of\u00a0Yang Jintong\u00a0<\/strong>(49.24),\u00a0Cao Jiwen\u00a0<\/strong>(48.29),\u00a0Sun Yang\u00a0<\/strong>(48.38) and\u00a0Yu Hexin\u00a0<\/strong>(47.38) came home with the silver medal thanks to a stellar split by their anchor Yu, but it was not enough as Japan has won three out of the four relays contested so far this week.<\/p>\n

                          The Japanese swam a tick faster at Pan Pacs earlier this month. China’s time puts them in sixth place for the world rankings for 2018.<\/p>\n

                          Singapore won the bronze medal at 3:17.22 to get by Korea who was fourth at 3:17.92.\u00a0Zheng Quah\u00a0<\/strong>(49.64),\u00a0Joseph Schooling\u00a0<\/strong>(48.27),\u00a0Darren Chua\u00a0<\/strong>(49.64) and\u00a0Darren Lim\u00a0<\/strong>(49.67) swam for the bronze medal winning Singaporeans.<\/p>\n

                              Mixed 4×100 Medley Relay<\/h3>\n

                              In the final relay of the night on night four of swimming from the 2018 Asian Games, it was China winning the 4×100 mixed medley relay with a 3:40.45. It is the first time the relay has been contested at the Asian Games so it will count as a new Games Record.<\/p>\n

                              The team of\u00a0Xu Jiayu\u00a0<\/strong>(52.30),\u00a0Yan Zibei\u00a0<\/strong>(58.45),\u00a0Zhang Yufei\u00a0<\/strong>(56.61) and\u00a0Zhu Menghui\u00a0<\/strong>(53.09) won the gold medal ahead of Japan who swam a 3:41.21 for the silver medal. The Japanese had\u00a0Ryosuke Irie\u00a0<\/strong>(52.55),\u00a0Yasuhiro Koseki\u00a0<\/strong>(58.95),\u00a0Rikako Ikee\u00a0<\/strong>(55.68) and\u00a0Tomomi Aoki\u00a0<\/strong>(54.03) swimming for them.<\/p>\n

                              South Korea finished with the bronze at 3:49.27 with\u00a0Lee Juho\u00a0<\/strong>(55.36),\u00a0Moon Jaekwon<\/strong>,\u00a0An Sehyeon\u00a0<\/strong>(57.93) and\u00a0Ko Miso<\/strong> swimming for them.<\/p>\n
