{"id":326280,"date":"2018-08-20T08:44:19","date_gmt":"2018-08-20T15:44:19","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/?p=326280"},"modified":"2018-08-20T08:44:19","modified_gmt":"2018-08-20T15:44:19","slug":"ferry-weertman-wins-rcp-tiburon-mile-ahead-of-heron-vargas-grothe-twichell","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/ferry-weertman-wins-rcp-tiburon-mile-ahead-of-heron-vargas-grothe-twichell\/","title":{"rendered":"Ferry Weertman Wins RCP Tiburon Mile Ahead Of Heron, Vargas, Grothe, Twichell"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Loaded with some of swimming\u2019s biggest names in distance \u2014\u00a0and some who aren\u2019t even distance specialists \u2014 the 2018 RCP Tiburon Mile had an exciting finish with a big group of elite swimmers competing in the open water ocean race in San Francisco.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Ferry Weertman<\/strong> of the Netherlands, fresh off a victory in open water at the 2018 European Championships, finished first in the elite group in 21:50, finishing just one second ahead of <strong>David<\/strong> <strong>Heron<\/strong> (21:50) and two seconds ahead of Michigan\u2019s <strong>Ricardo Vargas<\/strong> (21:52).<\/p>\n<p>Team USA members <strong>Zane Grothe<\/strong> and <strong>Ashley Twichell<\/strong> each finished at 21:56, giving Twichell the women\u2019s victory.<br \/>\n<strong>Becca Mann<\/strong> was next at 22:09, followed by a trio of Italians \u2014\u00a0<strong>Rachele Bruni<\/strong> (22:14), <strong>Martina Dememme<\/strong> (22:18) and <strong>Caroline Jouisse<\/strong> (22:46).<\/p>\n<p><strong>Alex Meyer<\/strong> of the U.S. was 10th (23:26).<\/p>\n<p>There were plenty of non-distance and non-open water specialists that competed as well.
