China’s\u00a0Sun Yang\u00a0<\/strong>finally won the Asian Games gold medal in the 200 free with a 1:45.43 on Sunday night in Jakarta, Indonesia. Sun had won two straight silver medals in the Asian Games in the 200 free, finishing behind\u00a0Park Tae Hwan\u00a0<\/strong>and\u00a0Kosuke Hagino\u00a0<\/strong>the last two times. Neither of those swimmers were swimming the event so the gold medal was Sun’s to lose.<\/p>\n

Sun swam a 1:45.43 to finish almost a full second ahead of Japan’s\u00a0Katsuhiro Matsumoto\u00a0<\/strong>(1:46.50) despite the Japanese swimmer going faster at Pan Pacs earlier this month. China got two on the podium with Ji Xinjie\u00a0<\/strong>(1:46.68) finishing with the bronze medal.<\/p>\n

Jordan almost made Asian Games history by winning their first medal in swimming but\u00a0Khader Baqlah\u00a0<\/strong>finished in fourth at 1:46.77. Baqlah is going to be a junior at the University of Florida.<\/p>\n

Japan’s\u00a0Naito Ehara\u00a0<\/strong>(1:47.66), Malaysia’s\u00a0Welson Sim\u00a0<\/strong>(1:47.99), Korea’s\u00a0Lee Hojoon\u00a0<\/strong>(1:48.10) and Vietnam’s\u00a0Huang Quy\u00a0<\/strong>(1:50.57) also competed in the final.<\/p>\n

This is China’s first gold medal in this event at the Asian Games since\u00a0Liu Yu\u00a0<\/strong>won in 2002 and it is their third overall gold as Sun joins Liu and\u00a0Xie Jun\u00a0<\/strong>(1990) as winners in the event for China.<\/p>\n
