It was almost a mirror image of the women’s 4×200 free relay earlier in the night. Australia had the lead on the United States and it was up to the American anchor to try and catch the Australians over the last 200.\u00a0Katie Ledecky\u00a0<\/strong>could not quite catch\u00a0Maddie Groves<\/strong> in the women’s relay. But in the men’s relay,\u00a0Townley Haas\u00a0<\/strong>successfully swam down\u00a0Jack Cartwright\u00a0<\/strong>of Australia and the United States won its first relay gold medal of the 2018 Pan Pacific Swimming Championships in Tokyo.<\/p>\n

The Americans won the gold medal in 7:04.36 with\u00a0Andrew Seliskar\u00a0<\/strong>(1:46.75),\u00a0Blake Pieroni\u00a0<\/strong>(1:47.63),\u00a0Zach Apple<\/strong>\u00a0(1:46.20)\u00a0and Haas (1:43.78). The Australians put up a valiant effort in second as they got the silver with Clyde Lewis\u00a0<\/strong>(1:46.54),\u00a0Kyle Chalmers\u00a0<\/strong>(1:46.73),\u00a0Alexander Graham<\/strong>\u00a0(1:45.91)\u00a0and\u00a0Jack Cartwright<\/strong>\u00a0(1:45.52)\u00a0at 7:04.70.<\/p>\n

Haas’s split is one of the fastest all-time.\u00a0Sun Yang\u00a0<\/strong>has been a 1:43.16 and\u00a0Yannick Agnel\u00a0<\/strong>has been a 1:43.24. Based off of a quick internet search, Haas is roughly third all-time in splits with his 1:43.78, moving ahead of\u00a0James Guy’s\u00a0<\/strong>1:43.80 from last year.<\/p>\n

Japan was a distant third at 7:08.07 with Naito Ehara\u00a0<\/strong>(1:47.28),\u00a0Reo Sakata\u00a0<\/strong>(1:47.07),\u00a0Yuki Kobori<\/strong>\u00a0(1:48.41)\u00a0and\u00a0Katsuhiro Matsumoto\u00a0<\/strong>(1:45.31).<\/p>\n

Brazil (7:11.65) and Canada (7:18.25) also competed in the final.<\/p>\n

Both the United States and Australia beat Great Britain’s winning time<\/a> from Europeans earlier this week.<\/p>\n
