IT was an exciting first day for World Cup swimmers and fans in the Beijing Water Cube. There were strong showings from the Chinese and Australians, with notable swims by China&#039;s Ye Shiwen in the 200 IM and the Australian trio of Tomasso D&#039;Orsogna, Cameron McEvoy and Kenneth To, who monopolized the medals in the 100 freestyle. Although Katinka Hosszu is seeded first in the event by a considerable margin, and has been dominant in the event since the start of the series, Ye Shiwen will provide pressure from lane one. Ye won Olympic gold and broke the world record in the long course version of event in London. If Ye breaks the SCM 400IM world record in tomorrow&#039;s finals, she&#039;ll take home some serious cash ($10,000) and threaten Hosszu&#039;s lead for the women. <\/p>\n<p>Although this Tweet from George Bovell is from several weeks ago, it speaks volumes about what World Cup enthusiasts look forward to in the men&#039;s 50 freestyle:<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\">\n<p>We smashed through the 21 barrier! Ervin is seeded second with his American Record-breaking 21.21, clocked at the last World Cup meet in Berlin, Germany.
