BATON ROUGE, Louisiana, October 27. LSU junior swimmer Torrey Bussey scored three individual victories and one relay victory as the Lady Tigers (4-1, 1-1 SEC) completed the weekend sweep with a hard fought 167-132 victory over North Carolina State in the LSU Natatorium.<\/p>\n
LSU defeated Tulane by a score of 174-69 on Friday night in New Orleans.<\/p>\n
“With Torrey, it is a whole different story right now as far as her progression after surgery. She is swimming at a level that is honestly higher than it has been this early in a season,” Geyer said. “To swim the 100 breaststroke, 200 breaststroke and 200 individual medley is a physical toll. She is a tough woman and can handle that.”<\/p>\n
Freshman diver Cassie Weil swept the diving events, giving her five individual titles in six attempts thus far this season.<\/p>\n
“She is a solid performer that is competing every single time she is given the opportunity,” Diving Coach Doug Shaffer said. “She has high goals for the championships season. Her game today wasn't as good as what she did at Auburn (where she set the program's all-time three-meter record), but it definitely was an excellent performance on the one-meter and three-meter.”<\/p>\n
LSU got off to an exceptional start, finishing first in the 200 medley relay and setting the LSU Natatorium record with a time of 1:41.97. Freshman Caley Oqusit led off and was followed by Bussey, junior Rainey White and sophomore Amber Carter.<\/p>\n
NC State responded with a trio of victories in the 200 freestyle, the 1000 freestyle and the 100 backstroke.<\/p>\n
The Lady Tigers immediately turned the momentum back in their favor as Bussey posted a 100 breast season best time of 1:02.30 in a first place finish. Freshman Taryn MacKenzie swam a time of 1:03.65 and finished second.<\/p>\n
In the next event, the 200 butterfly, LSU seniors Sara Haley (2:00.81), Audrey Lawson (2:03.06) and Kaelee Mader (2:05.68) finished 1-2-3.<\/p>\n
Carter chipped in a first place swim in the 50 free (23.26), but NC State began clawing at LSU's lead with second and third place finishes.<\/p>\n
“We came back with that 100 breast, but the huge swing was the 1-2-3 finish in the 200 fly,” Geyer said. “We won the 50 free and the one-meter, and really just went on from there.”<\/p>\n
LSU received a boost from Weil's first place finish (294.60) and sophomore Alex Bettridge's second place finish (290.33) on the one-meter springboard.<\/p>\n
“They performed excellent under orchestrated difficult conditions,” Shaffer said. “You go down to Tulane in the afternoon, warm up quick and dive, and then turn around, come back to Baton Rouge and compete. You are trying to set a situation like the conference championships where you now dive four days in a row.”<\/p>\n
Following the first diving break, LSU led 86 to 59. NC State's All-ACC swimmer Hannah Freyman (50.44) picked up a victory in the 100 free to narrow the margin.<\/p>\n
The Lady Tigers replied with first and second place finishes in the 200 back behind senior Jana Ruimerman (2:01.57) and sophomore Katlin Sepp (2:03.21).<\/p>\n
Bussey added her third victory of the meet with a first place swim in the 200 breast (2:16.08).<\/p>\n
However, NC State refused to go down and finished 1-2-3 in the 500 free. Kristin Connors earned her second victory of the meet with a mark of 4:57.16.<\/p>\n
In the 100 fly, White took first with a time of 55.46, and Haley finished third with a time of 56.79.<\/p>\n
The diver's clinched the meet, as Weil (344.55), Bettridge (294.23) and senior Elle Schmidt (285.83) finished 1-2-3 on the three-meter.<\/p>\n
“We responded very well,” Shaffer said. “We're tired. We worked really hard this week. To succeed with a schedule like that, I am really proud.”<\/p>\n
Bussey added her fourth victory of the meet in the 200 IM (2:04.78). Senior Sally Wood placed second in the event with a time of 2:05.56.<\/p>\n
“The meet today point wise played out almost exactly how I thought it was going to play out,” Geyer said. “I knew there were some events that we were going to get knocked down in. Every time we did, we responded with a win, back-to-back wins or a 1-2 finish. It was a fun dual meet to be a part of.”<\/p>\n
The entire LSU Swimming and Diving program will host Alabama on Friday, Nov. 2, in the LSU Natatroium at 1 p.m. (CT).<\/p>\n
Last season the men's team defeated Alabama in a dual that came down to the final relay event by a score of 151-149. The Lady Tigers also defeated Alabama last season by a score of 175.5-124.5.<\/p>\n
