Romanchuk made his way back to the top of the podium in the 800, putting up a time of 7:42.96 that makes him the fastest swimmer in the world this year. Previously, the USA&#8217;s <strong>Zane Grothe\u00a0<\/strong>held that top spot at 7:44.57.<\/p>\n<p>Italy&#8217;s <strong>Gregorio Paltrinieri\u00a0<\/strong>took second in 7:45.12, holding off an impressive last 50 from Wellbrock. Wellbrock took bronze in 7:45.60, and those two remain No. 3 and No. 4, respectively, in the world rankings.<\/p>\n<p>Norway&#8217;s <strong>Henrik Christiansen <\/strong>put up a strong effort from lane eight, but he ended up fourth in 7:46.75. Sjostrom, who holds the world record at 51.71 and tied her own championship record at 52.67 in the semi-finals, went out quick and held on to win in 52.93.<\/p>\n<p>The Netherlands&#8217;\u00a0<strong>Femke Heemskerk<\/strong> finished quickly to take silver in 53.23, followed by France&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Charlotte Bonnet\u00a0<\/strong>for bronze in 53.35.<\/p>\n<p>Great Britain&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Freya Anderson<\/strong>, who has anchored two relays to gold this week, finished fourth in 53.61, smashing her own European junior record of 53.88.<\/p>\n<p>Italy&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Federica Pellegrini<\/strong>, the world record-holder in the 200 free, finished fifth in her only individual final of the week, touching in 54.04. Peaty failed to take gold in the 50 breast earlier this year at the Commonwealth Games, finishing second behind\u00a0<strong>Cameron van der Burgh<\/strong>, but he was back in sizzling form in Glasgow.<\/p>\n<p>Peaty touched in 26.09, 14-hundredths off his own world record of 25.95. That broke his championship record of 26.23 from Tuesday&#8217;s semi-finals. The time was the third-fastest performance in history, and no one else has ever been quicker than 26.52. Peaty was nearly dead even with the field after 25 meters, but he left the rest of the field in the dust after that.<\/p>\n<p>Italy&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Fabio Scozzoli\u00a0<\/strong>was the best of the rest, touching in 26.79. Scozzoli has been just a bit quicker this year, ranking third in 26.73. Bronze went to Slovenia&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Peter John Stevens\u00a0<\/strong>in 27.06.<\/p>\n<p>Russia&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Kirill Prigoda\u00a0<\/strong>(27.18) and Serbia&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Caba Siladji<\/strong> (27.20) just missed medals. Only\u00a0<strong>Cesar Cielo\u00a0<\/strong>(20.91) and\u00a0<strong>Fred Bousquet\u00a0<\/strong>(20.94) have ever been quicker.<\/p>\n<p>Proud moved past\u00a0<strong>Caeleb Dressel&#8217;s\u00a0<\/strong>winning time from last year&#8217;s World Championships (21.15) as the fastest ever in textile. He also broke\u00a0<strong>Florent Manaudou&#8217;s\u00a0<\/strong>championship record of 21.32 from 2014. And Proud might have more in the tank for the final, especially after a long finish which could have cost him a couple hundredths.<\/p>\n<p>Italy&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Andrea Vergani\u00a0<\/strong>qualified second behind Proud in 21.37, and Russia&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Vladimir Morozov\u00a0<\/strong>qualified third in 21.44. The duo improved to third and fourth, respectively, in the world this year.<\/p>\n<p>Greece&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Kristian Gkolomeev\u00a0<\/strong>qualified fourth in 21.52, followed by Poland&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Pawel Juraszek\u00a0<\/strong>(21.67), Finland&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Ari-Pekka Liukkonen\u00a0<\/strong>(21.96) and the Netherlands&#8217;\u00a0<strong>Jesse Puts\u00a0<\/strong>(22.02). There will be a swim-off for the last spot in the final between Lithuania&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Simonas Bilis\u00a0<\/strong>and Ukraine&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Andriy Govorov<\/strong>, the 50 fly European champion. Sjostrom, about 40 minutes after winning the 100 free, swam a time of 25.51 &#8212; compared to her world record of 24.43 from 2014 and her championship record of 24.87.<\/p>\n<p>France&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Melanie Henique\u00a0<\/strong>qualified second in 25.68, and Belgium&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Kimberly Buys\u00a0<\/strong>was third in 25.76.
