Lessons with the Legends: Matt Mann II – August 2018 Issue<\/h2>\n

Swimming World<\/em>\u00a0continues a series in which top coaches share some of the secrets of their success. The August issue of Swimming World Magazine<\/em>\u00a0highlights the many accomplishments of Coach Matt Mann II<\/strong>.<\/b><\/p>\n

Michigan athletic director Fritz Crisler<\/strong> called Matt Mann II \u201cthe greatest coach who ever lived.\u201d A Brit and champion swimmer with unbridled energy, Mann immigrated into the United Statesin his early 20s. His first coaching stops included Brookline, Mass., Buffalo, N.Y., University of Syracuse, Harvard, Yale, theDuluth (Minn.) Boat Club and Detroit Athletic Club. At one time,he simultaneously coached the New York Athletic Club, Yale, Brooklyn Poly Prep, The Lawrenceville School and the Naval Academy, producing winning records at each.<\/p>\n

Mann\u2019s legacy became secure as the University of Michigan\u2019s fourth swimming coach. In his 29 years (1925-54) in Ann Arbor, Mann\u2019s Wolverines captured 16 Big Ten and 13 national collegiateteam titles. During that time, he produced 80 individual NCAA champions and won five consecutive NCAA titles from 1937 to 1941. Following his retirement from Michigan\u2014due to a state agerestriction requirement\u2014he went to the University of Oklahoma and promptly won eight straight Big Eight titles. He also developed more than 35 Big Ten, intercollegiate and high school coaches, including Purdue\u2019s hall of famer, Dick Papenguth<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Mann\u2019s reputation was further cemented when he was selected as men\u2019s head coach for the 1952 U.S. Olympic team. His squad won four gold, two silvers and one bronze medal in the six swimming events. Ironically, Mann was the college coach for John Davies<\/strong>, who won gold in the 200 breaststroke for Australia.<\/p>\n
