Italy’s\u00a0Gregorio Paltrinieri<\/strong> entered as the reigning World and Olympic champion in the 1500 free, but he could not keep up with two young stars who stormed to gold and silver. Germany’s\u00a0Florian Wellbrock\u00a0<\/strong>jumped out to a lead over the second half of the race and held off an impressive late charge from Ukraine’s\u00a0Mykhailo Romanchuk\u00a0<\/strong>to take the gold medla.<\/p>\n

Wellbrock finished in 14:36.15, followed by Romanchuk in 14:36.88. The duo improved to fourth and fifth all-time in the event, respectively, trailing only\u00a0Sun Yang<\/strong>, Paltrinieri and the\u00a0legendary\u00a0Grant Hackett<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Paltrinieri ended up fading to bronze in 14:42.85.<\/p>\n

Italy ended up going 3-4, despite the absence of\u00a0Gabriele Detti<\/strong>, as\u00a0Domenico Azerenza\u00a0<\/strong>came in at 14:51.88. Norway’s\u00a0Henrik Christiansen\u00a0<\/strong>came in fifth at 14:56.47, followed by France’s\u00a0Damien Joly\u00a0<\/strong>(14:57.82), Ukraine’s\u00a0Sergey Frylov\u00a0<\/strong>(14:58.46) and the Czech Republic’s\u00a0Jan Micka\u00a0<\/strong>(14:59.49).<\/p>\n
