A Voice for the Sport – August 2018 Issue<\/h2>\n

Misty Hyman – Female HS Swimmer of the Year (1996-97)<\/h3>\n

The photo shoot for Swimming World<\/i>\u2019s High School Swimmer of the Year in 1997 was my favorite. We were invited to come to Sea World early in the morning before it opened, and I got to pose with dolphins!<\/p>\n

I will never forget being surprised by their sheer strength and power. I was excited, but a little afraid to pose next to them. I was honored by the comparison and thrilled to grace the cover of Swimming World<\/i>.<\/p>\n

Being named High School Swimmer of the Year was an important steppingstone for me on my way to the medal podium in Sydney. I feel that honoring and celebrating success along the way plays an important role in motivating young athletes to work hard to reach the next level.<\/p>\n

It is easy to shrug off high school swimming as unimportant or as a distraction from the USA Swimming season, but I feel that for many swimmers it can play an important role in their development. I know it did for me.<\/p>\n

I learned a lot about team culture, leadership and performing under pressure that helped me to prepare for college swimming and beyond\u2014but most importantly, I just had a lot of fun!<\/p>\n

I am so happy that Swimming World<\/i> continues to recognize great high school swimming performances.<\/p>\n

Kara Lynn Joyce – Female HS Swimmer of the Year (2003)<\/h3>\n

I was honored to receive the SOTY award by Swimming World<\/i> in 2003. I had been swimming competitively since first grade, and I was well aware of this award and the incredible swimmers who had won it in years past.<\/p>\n

Winning the award was a big step forward on my journey and was the first time I genuinely believed that I could one day be an Olympian. It also boosted my confidence to pursue that dream in 2004.<\/p>\n

Receiving this honor not only validated the love and passion I had for high school swimming, but it also validated the selflessness and hard work of so many other amazing people in my life who made it possible for me to chase my dreams.<\/p>\n

One of the greatest things swimming taught me was just how valuable and necessary teammates are to success. I loved every aspect of being a member of a team\u2014the camaraderie and love you gain for each other is the greatest gift sports can give you.<\/p>\n

In 2016, I founded the Lead Sports Summit for teenage-girl swimmers. I wanted to create a space for teenage girls to hone their skills as athletes, and to help them learn just how strong and impactful they can be when they come together as a team, lean on each other, build each other up and lead together.<\/p>\n

I look forward to cheering on this year\u2019s award winners, and will be following their journeys in the years to come!<\/p>\n
