During the second evening of finals at the 2018 European Championships, Great Britain’s Adam Peaty\u00a0<\/strong>set a world record in the men’s 100 breast,\u00a0and Russian teenager\u00a0Kliment Kolesnikov\u00a0<\/strong>followed that up with another world record<\/a> in the men’s 50 back.<\/p>\n

Additionally,\u00a0Sarah Sjostrom\u00a0<\/strong>won a pair of gold medals, in the women’s 100 fly and 50 free, while Russia’s\u00a0Yulia Efimova\u00a0<\/strong>broke a championship record in the women’s 100 breast semi-finals. Finally, the mixed 4×200 free relay made its international debut to conclude the night.<\/p>\n

Women’s 800 Free FINAL<\/strong><\/h3>\n

Italy’s\u00a0Simona Quadarella\u00a0<\/strong>took command of the women’s 800 free final and pulled away to capture the first gold medal of night No. 2 at the European Championships. Quadarella put up a massive time of 8:16.35, making her the second-fastest swimmer in the world this year behind\u00a0Katie Ledecky<\/strong> and the seventh-fastest swimmer of all-time, in between the great\u00a0Janet Evans\u00a0<\/strong>(8:16.22) and\u00a0Boglarka Kapas\u00a0<\/strong>(8:16.37).<\/p>\n

Hungary’s\u00a0Anja Kesely\u00a0<\/strong>took second in 8:21.91, setting the first European junior record in the event. Russia’s\u00a0Anna Egorova\u00a0<\/strong>claimed bronze in 8:24.61, just ahead of Germany’s\u00a0Sarah Koehler\u00a0<\/strong>(8:25.81).<\/p>\n

Hungary’s Kapas fell to fifth in 8:26.32, followed by Slovenia’s\u00a0Tjasa Oder<\/strong> (8:30.08),\u00a0Liechtenstein’s\u00a0Julia Hassler\u00a0<\/strong>(8:33.00) and\u00a0Spain’s\u00a0Jimena Perez Blanco<\/strong> (8:35.51).<\/p>\n

Men’s 100 Breast FINAL<\/strong><\/h3>\n

Great Britain’s\u00a0Adam Peaty<\/strong> took down his own world record in the men’s 100 breast on his way to a dominant performance at the European Championships. After a stunning 0.47 reaction time, Peaty went out in 26.65 and finished in 57.00, under his own world record of 57.13 set on his way to Olympic gold two years ago.<\/p>\n

Peaty has admitted that he is aiming for a sub-57-second 100 breaststroke before the 2020 Olympics in Tokyo, and now, he just has one-hundredth to go.<\/p>\n

Great Britain ended up finishing 1-2 in the race, as teammate\u00a0James Wilby\u00a0<\/strong>took second in 58.54, moving him behind Peaty and\u00a0Cameron van der Burgh\u00a0<\/strong>as the third-fastest swimmer in history. Russia’s\u00a0Anton Chupkov<\/strong>, the World Champion in the 200 breast, took third in 58.96, followed by teammate\u00a0Kirill Prigoda\u00a0<\/strong>in 59.10.<\/p>\n

Italy’s\u00a0Fabio Scozzoli\u00a0<\/strong>(59.51), Lithuania’s\u00a0Andruis Sidlauskas\u00a0<\/strong>(59.52), the Netherlands’\u00a0Arno Kamminga\u00a0<\/strong>(59.59) and Serbia’s\u00a0Caba Siladji\u00a0<\/strong>(1:00.05) filled out places five through eight, respectively.<\/p>\n

Women’s 100 Fly FINAL<\/strong><\/h3>\n

Swedish superstar\u00a0Sarah Sjostrom<\/strong> went out under world record-pace for the first 50 meters of her 100 fly, but she couldn’t quite hang on to that sizzling pace. Sjostrom ended up finishing in 56.13, moving her ahead of\u00a0Rikako Ikee\u00a0<\/strong>(56.23) as the fastest swimmer in the world this year.<\/p>\n

No one in the field could challenge Sjostrom. Russia’s\u00a0Svetlana Chimrova\u00a0<\/strong>finished second in 57.30, and Italy’s\u00a0Elena Di Liddo\u00a0<\/strong>took bronze in 57.58. Just missing the medals were Italy’s\u00a0Ilaria Bianchi\u00a0<\/strong>(57.62) and Greece’s\u00a0Anna Ntountounaki\u00a0<\/strong>(57.67).<\/p>\n

Also in the final were Sweden’s\u00a0Louise Hansson\u00a0<\/strong>(57.89), Denmark’s\u00a0Emilie Beckmann\u00a0<\/strong>(58.35) and Germany’s\u00a0Aleina Schmidtke\u00a0<\/strong>(58.80).<\/p>\n

Men’s 100 Free Semi-Finals<\/strong><\/h3>\n

The top three times in the men’s 100 free semi-finals and four of the top five came out of the first of two heats.\u00a0Italy’s Alessandro Miressi\u00a0<\/strong>led the way in 48.11, followed by French World Championships bronze medalist\u00a0Mehdy Metella\u00a0<\/strong>in 48.31.<\/p>\n

Hungary’s Nandor Nemeth\u00a0<\/strong>and\u00a0Russia’s\u00a0Vladislav Grinev\u00a0<\/strong>tied for third in 48.48. Grinev and fellow Russian\u00a0Danila Izotov\u00a0<\/strong>combined to lock teammate\u00a0Vladimir Morozov\u00a0<\/strong>out of the semi-finals because of the two-per-country rule.<\/p>\n

Scotish hometown favorite\u00a0Duncan Scott\u00a0<\/strong>qualified fifth in 48.52, followed by Ukraine’s\u00a0Sergii Shevtsov\u00a0<\/strong>(48.62), Italy’s\u00a0Luca Dotto\u00a0<\/strong>(48.66) and Croatia’s\u00a0Bruno Blaskovic\u00a0<\/strong>(48.800. Izotov missed the final by two-hundredths with his ninth-place time of 48.82.<\/p>\n

Women’s 100 Breast Semi-Finals<\/strong><\/h3>\n

Russia’s\u00a0Yulia Efimova\u00a0<\/strong>used her typical go-out-slow, come-back-fast strategy in the women’s 100 breast European semi-finals, and she turned in the top time with a 1:05.77. She broke the championship record of 1:06.16, a mark set by Lithuania’s\u00a0Ruta Meilutyte\u00a0<\/strong>two years ago.<\/p>\n

Efimova holds the top time in the world at 1:04.98, followed by American rival Lilly King\u00a0<\/strong>in 1:05.36.\u00a0Whatever happens in the final, Efimova will be looking to post a mark out of reach for King, who will compete next week at the Pan Pacific Championships in Tokyo.<\/p>\n

Great Britain’s\u00a0Siobhan-Marie O’Connor\u00a0<\/strong>qualified second in 1:06.89, and Italy’s\u00a0Arianna Castiglioni<\/strong> took third in 1:06.91. Also under 1:07 was Spain’s\u00a0Jessica Vall Montero\u00a0<\/strong>(1:06.98).<\/p>\n

Meilutyte took fifth in 1:07.06, and joining her in the final will be Spain’s\u00a0Marina Garcia Urzainqui<\/strong> (1:07.48), Sweden’s\u00a0Sophie Hansson\u00a0<\/strong>(1:07.51) and Italy’s\u00a0Martina Carraro\u00a0<\/strong>(1:07.61).<\/p>\n

Men’s 200 Fly Semi-Finals<\/strong><\/h3>\n

Hungary’s\u00a0Tamas Kenderesi<\/strong> and\u00a0Kristof Milak\u00a0<\/strong>claimed the top two seeds for the men’s 200 fly final as Kenderesi won the first semi-final in 1:55.16, and Milak claimed semi-final No. 2 in 1:55.38. Kenderesi was the Olympic bronze medalist in the event in 2016, while Milak is the world junior record-holder (1:52.71) and the World Champs silver medalist in the 100 fly.<\/p>\n

Hungary is so strong in the 200 fly that\u00a0Bence Bizco\u00a0<\/strong>finished third in prelims and\u00a02015 World Champion\u00a0Laszlo Cseh\u00a0<\/strong>was fifth, but neither made the semis because of the two-per-country rule.<\/p>\n

Denmark’s\u00a0Viktor Bromer\u00a0<\/strong>qualified third in 1:55.73, while Great Britain’s\u00a0James Guy<\/strong>, out quick over the first 150 meters before fading, took fourth in 1:56.06.<\/p>\n

Azerbaijan’s\u00a0Maksym Shemberev\u00a0<\/strong>(1:56.11), Belgium’s Louis Croenen\u00a0<\/strong>(1:56.48), Bulgaria’s\u00a0Antani Ivanov<\/strong> (1:56.58) and Poland’s\u00a0Jan Switkowski\u00a0<\/strong>(1:56.77) also got into the final.<\/p>\n

Women’s 50 Back Semi-Finals<\/strong><\/h3>\n

After setting a European record in prelims with a lightning-quick time of 27.21, Great Britain’s\u00a0Georgia Davies\u00a0<\/strong>did what she needed to do to claim lane four for Sunday’s final, touching in 27.46. Just behind her was Russia’s\u00a0Anastasia Fesikova<\/strong>, who swam a time of 27.49 to set up a run at gold in the final.<\/p>\n

Finland’s\u00a0Mimosa Jallow\u00a0<\/strong>took third in 27.62, followed by Poland’s\u00a0Alicja Tchorz<\/strong> (27.72), France’s\u00a0Beryl Gastadello\u00a0<\/strong>(27.86), the Czech Republic’s\u00a0Simona Baumrtova\u00a0<\/strong>(27.91), the Netherlands’\u00a0Kira Toussaint\u00a0<\/strong>(27.92) and Italy’s\u00a0Carlotta Zofkova\u00a0<\/strong>(27.94). So fast was the field that Italy’s\u00a0Silvia Scalia\u00a0<\/strong>posted a time of 27.96 and ended up ninth.<\/p>\n

Men’s 50 Back FINAL<\/strong><\/h3>\n

Russia’s\u00a0Kliment Kolesnikov\u00a0<\/strong>took down the world record in the men’s 50 back, touching in 24.00 to erase the 24.04 set by Great Britain’s\u00a0Liam Tancock\u00a0<\/strong>in 2009. Kolesnikov, 18, also smashed his own world junior record of 24.25 set in the semi-finals.<\/p>\n

Romania’s\u00a0Robert Glinta<\/strong>, who swam a time of 24.12 in the semis that now ranks fourth all-time, took silver in 24.55. Ireland’s\u00a0Shane Ryan\u00a0<\/strong>finished with a bronze medal, touching in 24.64.<\/p>\n

Russia’s\u00a0Vladimir Morozov\u00a0<\/strong>took fourth in 24.69, followed by France’s\u00a0Jeremy Stravius\u00a0<\/strong>(24.83), Belarus’\u00a0Mikita Tsmyh<\/strong> (25.04), Greece’s\u00a0Apostolos Christou\u00a0<\/strong>(25.14) and Israel’s\u00a0Jonatan Kopelev\u00a0<\/strong>(25.41).<\/p>\n

\"men-50-back\"<\/p>\n

Women’s 50 Free FINAL<\/strong><\/h3>\n

Sweden’s\u00a0Sarah Sjostrom\u00a0<\/strong>and Denmark’s\u00a0Pernille Blume\u00a0<\/strong>went head to head down the entire length of the pool, and just when it looked like Blume, the Olympic gold medalist in the event, Sjostrom fought back. Sjostrom hit the wall in 23.74, seven-hundredths off her own world record of 23.67. She broke Blume’s championship record of 23.85 from the semi-finals.<\/p>\n

Blume finished one-hundredth behind in 23.75, moving past\u00a0Cate Campbell\u00a0<\/strong>(23.78) as the third-fastest swimmer in history behind Sjostrom and\u00a0Britta Steffen<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

The Netherlands’\u00a0Ranomi Kromowidjojo<\/strong>, the 2012 Olympic gold medalist in both the 50 and 100 free, took bronze in 24.21.<\/p>\n

Russians\u00a0Mariia Kameneva\u00a0<\/strong>(24.40) and\u00a0Rozaliya Nasretdinova\u00a0<\/strong>(25.04) took fourth and fifth, respectively, followed by the Netherlands’\u00a0Tamara Van Vliet\u00a0<\/strong>(25.11), Greece’s\u00a0Theodora Drakou\u00a0<\/strong>(25.14) and Lithuania’s\u00a0Ruta Meilutyte\u00a0<\/strong>(25.16).<\/p>\n

\"women-50-free\"<\/p>\n

Mixed 4×200 Free Relay FINAL<\/strong><\/h3>\n

The mixed 4×200 free relay made its debut at the European Championships, and Germany out-dueled Russia to take the gold medal. The team of\u00a0Jacob Heidtmann\u00a0<\/strong>(1:46.52),\u00a0Henning Muehlleitner\u00a0<\/strong>(1:47.32),\u00a0Reva Foos\u00a0<\/strong>(1:58.25) and\u00a0Annika Bruhn<\/strong> (1:56.34) combined for a time of 7:28.43. Bruhn swam away from Russian anchor\u00a0Viktoriia Andreeva\u00a0<\/strong>after leading by just two-hundredths with 50 meters to go.<\/p>\n

Russia’s\u00a0Mikhail Vekovishchev<\/strong>,\u00a0Mikhail Dovgalyuk<\/strong>,\u00a0Valeriia Salamatina\u00a0<\/strong>and Andreeva took silver in 7:29.37, and Great Britain’s\u00a0Stephen Milne<\/strong>,\u00a0Craig McLean<\/strong>,\u00a0Kathryn Greenslade\u00a0<\/strong>and\u00a0Freya Anderson<\/strong> won bronze in 7:29.72. Anderson anchored in 1:55.80 to secure the medal for her country.<\/p>\n

Hungary took fourth in 7:31.19, ahead of Italy in 7:32.73.\u00a0Federica Pellegrini\u00a0<\/strong>split 1:56.76 on the third leg for Italy. Also in the final were the Netherlands (7:32.39), Israel (7:40.07) and Slovakia (8:03.50).<\/p>\n
