Top athletes from several countries are battling for continental supremacy, with Great Britain&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Georgia Davies\u00a0<\/strong>setting the first European record of the meet.<\/p>\n<p>Here is what happened on the first day of prelims:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/results\/2018-european-championships-day-two-prelims-day-2\/international-elite\/2018\/August\/4?rtn=%2Fresults%2Finternational-elite%3Fpage%3D1%26orderBy%3DResult.MeetStartDateTime%26sortDirection%3D1%26q%3D\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">DAY TWO PRELIMS RESULTS<\/span><\/a><\/p>\n<h3><strong>Men\u2019s 100 Freestyle<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Russia, fresh off their victory in the men\u2019s 4&#215;100 freestyle relay last night, had three men finish inside the top 5 in the preliminaries of the 100 free. Russian <\/span><b>Vladislav Grinev <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(48.38) was the top seed out of the morning, while countrymate <\/span><b>Danila Izotov <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(48.57) will advance third.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Notably, Russian <\/span><b>Vlad Morozov<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, who holds the fastest time in the world this year, was locked out of advancing as he finished fifth in 48.75. Only the top two swimmers from each country can advance past the preliminaries in each event. <\/span><\/p>\n<h3><strong>Women\u2019s 100 Breaststroke<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Lithuania\u2019s <\/span><b>Ruta Meilutyte <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">was the top seed out of the women\u2019s 100 breaststroke and the only swimmer under 1:07 with a 1:06.89. Russian <\/span><b>Yulia Efimova<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, who holds the top time in the world this year, qualified third in 1:07.25. <\/span><\/p>\n<h3><strong>Men\u2019s 200 Butterfly<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Hungarians went 1-2-3 in the heats of the 200 fly, with world junior record holder <\/span><b>Kristof Milak <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">qualifying first in 1:54.17. He was followed by countrymate <\/span><b>Tamas Kenderesi <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">in 1:54.91, while fellow Hungarian <\/span><b>Bence Biczo <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">was locked out in third with a 1:55.86. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Notably, Hungarian record holder <\/span><b>Laszlo Cseh <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">finished as the fourth Hungarian with a season best time of 1:55.91. While that was good for fifth, he won\u2019t be advancing past the preliminaries. The highest qualifying non-Hungarian was Denmark\u2019s <\/span><b>Viktor Bromer <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(1:55.90), who finished fourth out the heats and will be advancing as the third seed. <\/span><\/p>\n<h3><strong>Women\u2019s 50 Backstroke<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Great Britain\u2019s <\/span><b>Georgia Davies <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">set a new European record in the 50 back, leading all qualifiers with a top time of 27.21. That snuck by the old European record of 27.23 by .02 that was held by Germany\u2019s <\/span><b>Daniela Samulski <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and Belarus\u2019 <\/span><b>Aliaksandra Herasimenia<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Russia\u2019s <\/span><b>Anastasiia Fesikova <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">also matched the old record in the last heat, qualifying second in 27.23.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><strong>Mixed 4&#215;200 Freestyle<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The new addition to the European Championships program was led by Russia (7:33.16), Great Britain (7:34.49), and Germany (7:35.16). Each entered team swam with their two male entrants first, and Germany\u2019s <\/span><b>Jacob Heidtmann <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">had the fastest flat start split of the morning (1:46.81). \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><strong>Men\u2019s 1500 Freestyle<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It was France\u2019s <\/span><b>Damien Joly <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">who came away with the surprise top seed in the men\u2019s 1500, posting the top time of the morning in 14:53.52. In second was Ukraine\u2019s <\/span><b>Mykhaylo Romanchuk<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (14:53.79), while Germany\u2019s Florian Wellbrock was third (14:54.55).
