Also in the men&#8217;s 50 back, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/robert-glinta-kliment-kolesnikov-world-junior-record-shine-in-50-back-semis\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Russia&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Kliment Kolesnikov\u00a0<\/strong>set a world junior record<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Read below for an event-by-event summary of the session.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/vmrw8k5h.tinifycdn.com\/results\/pdf\/2018-european-championships-day-one-day-1-international-elite-2018-08-03.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>FULL RESULTS<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n<h3><strong>Women&#8217;s 400 IM FINAL<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>France&#8217;s <strong>Fantine Lesaffre\u00a0<\/strong>captured the first gold in swimming at the European Championships with a triumphant effort in the women&#8217;s 400 IM. Lasaffre took command of the race on the breaststroke leg and ended up winning by almost a second. She touched in 4:34.17, beating out\u00a0<strong>Ilaria Cusinato&#8217;s\u00a0<\/strong>4:34.65 from June as the fastest time in the world this year.<\/p>\n<p>Italy&#8217;s Cusinato took the silver medal with her time of 4:35.05, and Great Britain&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Hannah Miley\u00a0<\/strong>held off teammate\u00a0<strong>Aimee Willmott\u00a0<\/strong>for third, 4:35.34 to 4:35.77. Miley was the European champion in the event back in 2010.<\/p>\n<p>The medalists benefited from the absence of\u00a0<strong>Katinka Hosszu<\/strong>, the Hungarian who won Olympic gold in the 400 IM in 2016 as well as the past three World titles in the event. Hosszu is present at the meet but did not swim the 400 IM.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Zsuzsanna Jakobos\u00a0<\/strong>did compete in the event for Hungary, and she took fifth in 4:38.48. He led almost wire-to-wire, and his final time of 3:45.18 ranked him third in the world for 2018 behind the past two Olympic gold medalists in the event,\u00a0<strong>Mack Horton\u00a0<\/strong>and\u00a0<strong>Sun Yang<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>Norway&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Henrik Christiansen\u00a0<\/strong>finished third in 3:47.07, and Germany&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Henning Muehlleitner<\/strong> edged out Austria&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Felix Aubock<\/strong> for third, 3:47.18 to 3:47.24. That broke the meet record of 24.07 set by\u00a0<strong>Ranomi Kromowidjojo\u00a0<\/strong>in 2016 and moved her into a tie with Kromowidjojo as the fifth-fastest performer ever in the event. Blume&#8217;s previous best was a seventh-ranked 23.92 from June.<\/p>\n<p>Only\u00a0<strong>Sarah Sjostrom\u00a0<\/strong>(23.67),\u00a0<strong>Britta Steffen\u00a0<\/strong>(23.73) and\u00a0<strong>Cate Campbell\u00a0<\/strong>(23.78) have ever swum quicker.<\/p>\n<p>But Sjostrom will be a threat to Blume in the final as the Swede qualified second in 23.92. Only\u00a0<strong>Liam Tancock\u00a0<\/strong>(24.04) and\u00a0<strong>Camille Lacourt\u00a0<\/strong>(24.07) have ever beaten that time.<\/p>\n<p>Also skyrocketing up in the all-time rankings were a pair of Russians.\u00a0<strong>Kliment Kolesnikov\u00a0<\/strong>qualified second in 24.25, breaking his own world junior record of 24.46 set in April. Sjostrom recorded a time of 56.66, well off her world record of 55.48 and her own world No. 2-ranked time of 56.29.<\/p>\n<p>Sjostrom finished almost a full second ahead of anyone else in the field, with Russia&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Svetana Chimrova\u00a0<\/strong>her closest competition in 57.54. Peaty&#8217;s prelims swim marked the first time he or any man had broken 58 this year.<\/p>\n<p>Another Brit,\u00a0<strong>James Wilby<\/strong>, qualified second in 59.23.
