{"id":323414,"date":"2018-08-03T07:00:25","date_gmt":"2018-08-03T14:00:25","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/?p=323414"},"modified":"2018-08-03T07:02:18","modified_gmt":"2018-08-03T14:02:18","slug":"2018-european-championships-day-1-prelims-sarah-sjostrom-takes-two-top-seeds","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/2018-european-championships-day-1-prelims-sarah-sjostrom-takes-two-top-seeds\/","title":{"rendered":"2018 European Championships Day 1 Prelims: Sarah Sjostrom Takes Two Top Seeds"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The European Championships begin with Friday morning prelims in Glasgow, Scotland.<\/p>\n<p>Top athletes from several countries are battling for continental supremacy.<\/p>\n<p>Here is what happened on the first day of prelims:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/results\/2018-european-championships-day-1-prelims-day-1\/international-elite\/2018\/August\/3?rtn=%2Fresults%2Finternational-elite%3Fpage%3D1%26orderBy%3DResult.MeetStartDateTime%26sortDirection%3D1%26q%3D\">DAY 1 PRELIMS RESULTS<\/a><\/p>\n<h3>Women\u2019s 400 IM<\/h3>\n<p>With <strong>Katinka Hosszu<\/strong> not competing in this event this year, <strong>Fanzine Lesaffre<\/strong> of France took the top seed in 4:36.16.<\/p>\n<p>Britain\u2019s <strong>Aimee Willmott<\/strong> was second in 4:38.28, followed by <strong>Ilaria Cusimato<\/strong> of Italy (4:39.02) and Hungary\u2019s <strong>Zsuzsanna Jakobos<\/strong> (4:39.26).<\/p>\n<h3>Men\u2019s 400 Free<\/h3>\n<p>Ukraine\u2019s <strong>Mykhaylo Romanchuk<\/strong> cruised to the top seed in the 400 free, finishing in 3:46.95.<\/p>\n<p>Germany\u2019s <strong>Paul Zeilmann<\/strong> took the second seed (3:47.14), followed by compatriot <strong>Henning Muhlleitner<\/strong> (3:47.29) and Austria\u2019s <strong>Felix Aubock<\/strong> (3:48.01).<\/p>\n<h3>Women\u2019s 50 Free<\/h3>\n<p>No surprise in the women\u2019s 50 free as Sweden\u2019s <strong>Sarah Sjostrom<\/strong> took the top spot in the event at 24.14.<\/p>\n<p>Denmark\u2019s <strong>Pernille Blume<\/strong> was second at 24.27, followed by Russia\u2019s <strong>Maria Kameneva<\/strong> (24.39), <strong>Tamara Van Vliet<\/strong> of the Netherlands (24.77) and compatriots <strong>Ranomi Kromowidjojo<\/strong> (24.82) and <strong>Kim Busch<\/strong> (24..93).<\/p>\n<p>Should make for an exciting final.<\/p>\n<h3>Men\u2019s 50 Back<\/h3>\n<p>Ireland\u2019s<strong> Shane Ryan<\/strong> surged to the top seed in the 50 back at 24.32.<\/p>\n<p>Russia\u2019s<strong> Kliment Kolesnikov<\/strong> took the second spot at 24.58, followed by Romania\u2019s <strong>Robert-Andrei Glinta<\/strong> (24.59) and Russia\u2019s <strong>Vladimir Morozov<\/strong> (24.65).<\/p>\n<h3>Women\u2019s 100 Fly<\/h3>\n<p><strong>Sarah Sjostrom<\/strong> made it 2-for-2 with top seeds by taking the top spot in the 100 butterfly. She finished in 56.87.<\/p>\n<p>Italy\u2019s <strong>Elena Di Liddo<\/strong> took the second seed at 57.91, followed by compatriot <strong>Ilaria Bianchi<\/strong> (57.92). Russia\u2019s <strong>Svetlana Chimrova<\/strong> was fifth (38.24), followed by France\u2019s <strong>Marie Wattel<\/strong> (58.47) and Sweden\u2019s <strong>Louise Hansson<\/strong> (58.52).<\/p>\n<h3>Men\u2019s 100 Breast<\/h3>\n<p>Britain had a 1-2-3 sweep of the top seeds in the 100 breast, though because of meet rules, only two from each country can advance.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Adam Peaty<\/strong> took the top spot in 57.89, followed by <strong>James Wilby<\/strong> (59.12). <strong>Ross Murdoch<\/strong> finished in 59.14 but won\u2019t advance.<\/p>\n<p>Russia\u2019s <strong>Anton Chupkov<\/strong> was fourth (59.15), followed by <strong>Arno Kamminga<\/strong> of the Netherlands (59.53).<\/p>\n<h3>Women\u2019s 4&#215;100 Free Relay<\/h3>\n<p>The favored Netherlands team took the top spot in 3:38.30 despite not even using Kromowidjojo in the prelims. <strong>Femke Heemskerk<\/strong> anchored in 52.78.<\/p>\n<p>Italy was second (3:38.64), followed by France (3:39.13), Russia (3:39.48) and Switzerland (3:40.00).<\/p>\n<h3>Men\u2019s 4&#215;100 Free Relay<\/h3>\n<p>Italy hung on to take the top seed in the 4&#215;100 free relay thanks to a 48.88 start by<strong> Luca Dotto.<\/strong> The Italians finished in 3:15.29, holding off Poland (3:15.45), Hungary (3:15.55), Russia (3:15.77) and Serbia (3:15.90).<\/p>\n<h3>Women\u2019s 800 Free<\/h3>\n<p>Italy\u2019s <strong>Simona Quadrille<\/strong> took the top spot in the 800 free finishing in 8:23.93.<\/p>\n<p>She was four seconds faster than second-seed <strong>Ajna Kesely<\/strong> of Hungary, who finished in 8:27.96, one hundredth ahead of Russia\u2019s <strong>Anna Egorova<\/strong> (8&gt;29.27).<\/p>\n<p>Germany\u2019s <strong>Sarah Kohler<\/strong> was fourth (8:31.96).<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The European Championships begin with Friday morning prelims in Glasgow, Scotland.
