COLLEGE STATION, Texas – The Auburn men's swimming and diving team continued its impressive weekend defeating the No. 19 Texas A&M Aggies 164-124 here Saturday afternoon bringing the Tigers' season record to 5-0.
\n\tThe meet format was not the typical style as the teams swam 50, 150 and 300 yard events in addition to other regular events.
\n\tAuburn earned three sweeps on the night including a 1-2-3 finish in the 1650-yard freestyle, the 150 butterfly and the 50 fly. Junior James Galloway claimed the top spot in the 1650 free with a season-best time of 15:35.43, senior Christian Cantwell finished first in the 150 fly (1:18.86) and Andy Haidinyak took first in the 50 fly (22.62) for the Tigers.
\n\t"The 1650 free was probably the most important swim for us," head coach David Marsh said. "We were afraid of a let-down after winning the Texas meet and in the first race (200 medley relay), we didn't swim well. So for the guys to come back and finish 1-2-3 in the mile, it really got the momentum going for the rest of the meet."
\n\tFreshman Clay Kirkland continued the team's winning ways with a first place finish in the 150 free (1:12.30) and senior Jon Karr and Bryce Hunt followed with a first and second place finish in the 50 backstroke.
\n\tIn addition to Cantwell's victory in the 150 fly, Kirk Hampleman finished close behind in second with a time of 1:19.41.
\n\t"Christian had an outstanding time in the 150 fly," Marsh said. "Kirk really did well for us in the fly and back events today as well."
\n\tThe next event was the 50 free where Matt Kidd and Derek Gibb finished second and third respectively. Divers Matt Bricker and Caesar Garcia also finished second and third on the 1-meter springboard with scores of 294.07 and 283.42.
\n\tRyan Wochomurka was the top Auburn finisher in the 100 free with a time of 45.47 – second overall. In the 150 back, Hampleman placed on top (1:16.55) while Hunt came in second with a time of 1:18.81 for the Tigers.
\n\tOn the 3-meter, freshman Matt Bricker proved he was deserving of last week's SEC Athlete of the Week award winning the event with a score of 332.25.
\n\tTwo more impressive swims for Auburn were Mark Gangloff's 150 breast in a time of 1:28.54 and freshman BJ Jones' 300 free in 2:36.69. Senior Kevin Clements earned the top time of the day in the 300 individual medley with a time of 2:53.46 and the AU 200 free relay of Wochomurka, Kidd, Gibb and Eric vanGoethem earned the fastest time of the day at 1:21.80.
\n\t"Eric vanGoethem had some great relay swims for us today and Mark Gangloff was excellent in the 150 breast and the 300 IM," Marsh said.
\n\tThe men will take a portion of the team to the Dallas Morning News Invitational Jan. 18-19 and the entire men's and women's team will join together Jan. 25 at Florida for Auburn's final dual meet of the season.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
