THE recruiting wars keep heating up, and today it was the University of Southern California that got a big verbal commitment from Chelsea Chenault, who made the Olympic Trials final in the 200 freestyle. Chenault was formerly the independent national high school record holder in the 200 free and helped her school Carondelet win Swimming World Magazine&#039;s girls&#039; team title in 2010.<\/p>\n<p>Milorad Cavic made his retirement official today by posting an image of the retirement papers he signed and is submitting to FINA. Cavic has amassed a lot of great accomplishments in his career, highlighted by a silver medal in the 100 fly at the 2008 Olympics, missing gold by one hundredth of a second. Cavic is the second-fastest man in history in the long course 100 fly and his career includes setting two national high school records and two NCAA relay records. Swimming World wishes Cavic all the best in his future endeavors.<\/p>\n<p>USA Swimming released the names of the coaches who will attend the short course world championships in Turkey in two months, and the list reads like a Who&#039;s Who of great coaches. Arizona&#039;s Eric Hansen will be the head coach of the men&#039;s team, and will have three of his swimmers at the meet. Chuck Batchelor, head coach at Bluefish in Rhode Island, will lead the women&#039;s team. Three of the team&#039;s assistant coaches have earned their first international team gigs.Whitney Hite, who took Hansen&#039;s job at Wisconsin last year when Hansen moved to Arizona, is one of them, as is Western Kentucky&#039;s Bruce Marchionda, who coaches Olympian Claire Donahue, and Michigan&#039;s Josh White. The swimmers were named last week by USA Swimming and will include several Olympians and NCAA champions.<\/p>\n<p>The California Golden Bears&#039; men&#039;s swim team, the reigning NCAA Division I team champions, start their dual meet season today with a meet against the University of the Pacific. The Bears will be without their star senior Tom Shields, who is in Europe right now getting ready to compete in the Stockholm leg of the FINA World Cup, but they&#039;ll have plenty of standouts, including 200 IM champion Marcin Tarczynski and 200 fly champ Will Hamilton. The meet will also be a fundraiser for breast cancer research, and swimmers will be wearing pink caps and T-shirts. Since the team is outfitted by Arena, it&#039;s likely some swimmers might be wearing some of the pink swimsuits Arena introduced recently.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>PHOENX, Arizona, October 10.
