The Pan Pac team will start to take shape by the end of finals tonight as we are winding down to the end of the meet in Irvine.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Regan Smith\u00a0<\/strong>and\u00a0<strong>Phoebe Bacon\u00a0<\/strong>challenged the World Junior Record in the 100 back with Smith ultimately taking it.\u00a0<strong>Katie Ledecky\u00a0<\/strong>did what she always does and qualified first for the 400 free, and\u00a0<strong>Molly Hannis\u00a0<\/strong>busted up to third in the world rankings in the 100 breast.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/vmrw8k5h.tinifycdn.com\/results\/pdf\/2018-phillips-66-usa-swimming-nationals-day-4-prelims-heat-sheet-day-3-usa-senior-national-2018-07-28.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Heat Sheets<\/a><br \/>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/omegatiming.com\/Competition?id=0001120102ffffffffffffffffffffff&amp;day=4\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Live Results<\/a><br \/>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/www.usaswimming.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Stream<\/a><\/p>\n<h3>Women&#8217;s 400 Free<\/h3>\n<p>In what has become almost routine,\u00a0<strong>Katie Ledecky\u00a0<\/strong>and\u00a0<strong>Leah Smith\u00a0<\/strong>are on top of the 400 free heats at the USA Swimming National Championships. Ledecky and Smith have finished 1-2 at the last two Nationals and are showing signs of a three peat in 2018. Ledecky has the top seed with a 4:02.69 to Smith&#8217;s 4:05.14 as both are safely into tonight&#8217;s final.<\/p>\n<p>Ledecky and Smith have already qualified for the team after their top four finishes in the 200 free on Thursday night.<\/p>\n<p>The battle for third will be an extremely tight race as five other ladies swam a 4:08 in the heats in Irvine on Saturday morning.\u00a0<strong>Sierra Schmidt\u00a0<\/strong>of Michigan is the third seed at 4:08.12.\u00a0<strong>Hali Flickinger\u00a0<\/strong>(4:08.40),\u00a0<strong>Haley Anderson\u00a0<\/strong>(4:08.46),\u00a0<strong>Kaersten Meitz\u00a0<\/strong>(4:08.55) and\u00a0<strong>Geena Freriks\u00a0<\/strong>(4:08.91) all swam 4:08&#8217;s.\u00a0<strong>Kirsten Jacobsen\u00a0<\/strong>of Arizona is the eighth seed at 4:09.36.<\/p>\n<p>Flickinger and Anderson are already on the Pan Pac team after Flickinger <a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/hali-flickinger-wins-200-fly-to-open-u-s-nationals-just-off-morning-record\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">won the 200 fly<\/a> and Anderson <a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/michael-brinegar-hannah-moore-lead-usa-open-water-pan-pac-qualifiers-in-france\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">qualified<\/a> in Open Water.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Claire Tuggle\u00a0<\/strong>of Clovis Swim Club is number four all-time in the 13-14 NAG rankings with her 4:10.17 this morning. Grothe is just ahead of three other swimmers who went 3:48&#8217;s in the heats as it will be a dog fight to the wall tonight in the A-Final.<\/p>\n<p>Grothe is ahead of\u00a0<strong>Grant Shoults\u00a0<\/strong>(3:48.51),\u00a0<strong>Andrew Abruzzo <\/strong>(3:48.58) and\u00a0<strong>Chris Wieser\u00a0<\/strong>(3:48.69).<\/p>\n<p>The swimmers are going to need to swim much faster tonight if they want to compete with the rest of the world as the top time in the world this year is a 3:43.76 by Australia&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Mack Horton<\/strong>. Horton will be one of the favorites at the Pan Pacs in Japan in a couple weeks.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Trey Freeman\u00a0<\/strong>(3:49.02),\u00a0<strong>True Sweetser\u00a0<\/strong>(3:50.08),\u00a0<strong>Ben Lawless\u00a0<\/strong>(3:50.13) and\u00a0<strong>Zach Yeadon\u00a0<\/strong>(3:51.01) will also swim in the A-Final as every swimmer besides Grothe is younger than 22. Hannis is over a second ahead of the rest of the field as she swam the third fastest 100 breast of 2018. Hannis sits behind\u00a0<strong>Yulia Efimova\u00a0<\/strong>(1:04.98) and\u00a0<strong>Lilly King\u00a0<\/strong>(1:05.61) in the world rankings thus far this year.<\/p>\n<p>Hannis is ahead of some pretty good competition in King (1:06.98) and\u00a0<strong>Micah Sumrall\u00a0<\/strong>(1:06.92), as well as Olympians <strong>Katie Meili\u00a0<\/strong>(1:07.71) and\u00a0<strong>Breeja Larson\u00a0<\/strong>(1:08.01).<\/p>\n<p>King is not on the Pan Pac team yet as the 100 is her last chance to snag a spot on the plane to Tokyo.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Bethany Galat\u00a0<\/strong>(1:08.13) is already on the team by virtue of her second place 200 breaststroke. Wilson and Andrew are already in the mix for the Pan Pac team after Wilson was second in the 200 breast and Andrew was third in the 100 fly. Andrew will have other opportunities in the 100 breast and the 50 free tomorrow. This is Fink&#8217;s last chance to book his plane ticket to Japan.<\/p>\n<p>The rest of the field is stacked with Olympians\u00a0<strong>Cody Miller\u00a0<\/strong>(1:00.00),\u00a0<strong>Josh Prenot\u00a0<\/strong>(1:00.07) and\u00a0<strong>Kevin Cordes\u00a0<\/strong>(1:00.14) in the field.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Devon Nowicki\u00a0<\/strong>(1:00.02) and\u00a0<strong>Will Licon\u00a0<\/strong>(1:00.43) are also in line to make their first major international trip with the National A team. Licon swam last summer at the World University Games.<\/p>\n<p>With all the big names in the A-Final, there were bound to be some big A-Final misses. Smith finished just ahead of her old record of 59.11. She has been faster at 58.95 but that record has not been ratified.<\/p>\n<p>Smith is just ahead of 15-year-old\u00a0<strong>Phoebe Bacon\u00a0<\/strong>from Nation&#8217;s Capital Swim Club with her 59.12 this morning. Smith and Bacon now sit first and second in the 15-16 NAG rankings all-time.<\/p>\n<p>Both swimmers moved up to fifth and sixth in the world rankings for 2018.<\/p>\n<p>Those two are ahead of a pretty stacked field with 2017 World Championship team members\u00a0<strong>Kathleen Baker\u00a0<\/strong>(59.27) and\u00a0<strong>Olivia Smoliga\u00a0<\/strong>(59.36) sitting in third and fourth. Last night, four guys rocketed into the top 8 world rankings in the 50 back, and it could be a similar story here on Saturday at the Phillips 66 USA Swimming National Championships.\u00a0<strong>Matt Grevers\u00a0<\/strong>is looking to qualify for his third Pan Pac team with his 53.30 this morning in Irvine.<\/p>\n<p>Grevers is ahead of\u00a0<strong>Ryan Murphy\u00a0<\/strong>(53.63) and\u00a0<strong>Justin Ress\u00a0<\/strong>(53.82) who joined him under 54 seconds in the event. Murphy is already on the Pan Pac team after he won the 200 back on Thursday night.
