Day Five of the \u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.kahunaevents.org\/cgi-bin\/start.cgi\/NJO_2018\/2018_njo_divselect.htm\">2018 USA Water Polo National Junior Olympics<\/a>\u2014and the first of four days of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/deja-vu-all-over-again-girls-bracket-begins-today-at-2018-usa-water-polo-junior-olympics\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">competition<\/a> for two divisions of girls play\u2014took place Thursday at Ohlone College. Some readers might remember that last year Coach Reynolds helped explain the phenomenon of the world\u2019s largest youth polo tournament. There\u2019s a lot of separation by time and hours but, all the pools [USA Water Polo] has selected are beautiful.<\/p>\n<p><strong>&#8211; Wrapping my head around the national scale of this tournament is challenging enough; then there\u2019s the north \/ south divide between the California clubs.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>There\u2019s a great tournament in volleyball that USA Volleyball where they decide between a festival or a tournament that\u2019s going to be a national championship. Breaking JOs into the brackets [Championship and Classic] that we have is just wonderful because everybody, no matter what level, has a chance to compete in games that matter and games that lead to a championship.<\/p>\n<p>I\u2019m glad that you understand the magnitude of this because now we\u2019ve got a huge tournament. But that event doesn\u2019t feel as enormous as what\u2019s going on here for a week in Northern California.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>You have to remember that the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.littleleague.org\/world-series\/2018\/llbws\/world-series-homepage\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Little League World Series<\/a> is the result of competition that takes place at the local level. And, it\u2019s the result of a huge sport.<\/p>\n<p>We\u2019re not that big of a sport. This year we\u2019re just about to break the 50,000-member mark. We&#8217;re not that big by we have a lot of athletes participating.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s not going to winnow down to top teams; it\u2019s a festival and championship tournament [all in one].<\/p>\n<p><strong>&#8211; How does USA Water Polo manage for the exceptional growth of JOs while keeping the familiarity that makes water polo in the U.S. so distinctive?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>All of these tournaments are limited by facilities. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.usawaterpolo.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">USA Water Polo<\/a> has determined that this is such an important tournament for everybody that comes out from other parts of the country that we have to find the pools.<\/p>\n<p>To the extent that we\u2019re limited by pools, we have to limit the number of teams that can compete.<\/p>\n<p>If you speak with USA Water Polo, I believe their attitude is: How many teams can we bring in? Because it\u2019s a great experience for the kids.<\/p>\n<p><strong>&#8211; How important is it to have teams from all over the country descend on California for this one week of intense water polo action?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>My experience with this tournament is that, in the past\u2014before USA Water Polo was reorganized into a new management structure\u2014committees use to decide by vote where the tournament should be held. What we\u2019re finding is that teams from Brooklyn and Michigan, they actually like to come out to California. They like the idea that the tournament is balanced between Southern and Northern California.<\/p>\n<p>That has built the momentum in expanding JO and to generate the respect that your Brooklyn team receives when they play a California team.<\/p>\n<p><strong>&#8211; In terms of the regional divide, there\u2019s fierce competition between the NorCal and SoCal teams.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The expansion of the sport is what does it. I don\u2019t know what the numbers are but I would guess that Southern California has a proportionately higher number of players that compete.<\/p>\n<p>The whole NorCal \/ SoCal rivalry revolves around the number of universities that compete. You\u2019ve got Stanford and Cal, Pacific and San Jose State\u2014universities that kid up here like to attend. Down in Southern California, we\u2019re always playing the same teams, so it\u2019s wonderful to come up here for what&#8217;s like being in an international match. We get to test the waters against Stanford, 680 and Diablo Alliance.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s just wonderful because we don\u2019t get to see them very often during the rest of the year.<\/p>\n<p><strong>&#8211; Back East, Bill Smith of Greenwich Aquatics talks about how <a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/257786-2\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">clusters of competition<\/a> will really help the sport grow, both inside and outside of California.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>We want these kids to be so excited about this sport! I\u2019m a youth girls\u2019 coach\u2014girls 14, 13, 12; all the way down to 8 years old. I like to say that I\u2019m not the water polo technical guy but I am a good marketing guy.<\/p>\n<p>We just want them to play in high school. There\u2019s a lot of states like Texas and Florida that have thousands of high school athletes but we haven\u2019t really organized them into the club terrain.<\/p>\n<p>Bill is always completely right about how we organize and grow the sport. Water polo teams on the West Coast can crush teams in the East.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>I\u2019m in ground zero in Orange County where lacrosse [in the West] started and it\u2019s embarrassing. We have the CIF Orange County champions in the high school where I coach water polo and they go East and get crushed.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s interesting to watch how these sports attract kids to play.<\/p>\n<p>Next up is <strong>Sam Bass<\/strong>, head coach for Chelsea Piers, Connecticut, who spoke with <em>Swimming World<\/em> after a tough 6-4 loss by Chelsea Piers to open play in the 14 U Classic Division of JOs. The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.chelseapiersct.com\/aquatics\/youth-programs\/water-polo-programs\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">CPAC<\/a> girls had a fantastic win in their second match, beating San Clemente Tritons by penalty shots in sudden death. How does this affect your team?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>We\u2019re here to play. We have an awesome goalie who is playing with the U12s\u2014a National Team Selection Camp player\u2014and she\u2019s down with the 12U. We\u2019re here to play. These girls are waking up, they\u2019re ready to go and they don\u2019t care who\u2019s in the goal, who\u2019s where.<\/p>\n<p><strong>&#8211; You gave a pretty good 680 Drivers team a great game.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Any time you play a big club\u2019s \u201cB\u201d team they\u2019re disciplined, they know where to put the ball, they work hard. Our girl\u2019s talent-wise are right there. We\u2019re just as good as that team we played today. Photo Courtesy: Everardo Luna<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Closing out the day was the sighting of U.S. water polo royalty on the Ohlone College pool deck:<a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/on-the-record-with-brenda-villa\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong> Brenda Villa<\/strong><\/a>, a four-time Olympian, is the head coach for the 14U <a href=\"https:\/\/menloswim.com\/programs\/menlo-mavericks-water-polo\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Maverick<\/a> team from Menlo Park. As luck would have it, the Maverick\u2019s opponent was the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nycap.nyc\/brooklyn-water-polo\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">team<\/a> from Brooklyn, NY coached by <strong>Gabby Juarez<\/strong>, who\u2014like Villa\u2014grew up in Commerce, California and played age group water polo for Commerce.<\/p>\n<p>The teams of the two coaches faced off in the pool\u2014an 8-5 win for the Brooklyn Hustle squad\u2014and after the match Villa and Juarez spoke with <em>Swimming World<\/em> about their common roots and the basis of their cross-continental contest.<\/p>\n<p><strong>&#8211; You are both from Commerce, California and made good through water polo.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Villa:<\/strong> The interesting thing is you have two Commerce [natives]; one\u2019s on the East Coast, one\u2019s on the West Coast. That\u2019s what I like to see because I want polo to become a national sport, so when we get kids on the East Coast playing, it helps.<\/p>\n<p>Not that there\u2019s isn\u2019t enough polo in the East but the more we can crossover and attract new kids, water polo benefits.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Juarez:<\/strong> It\u2019s an honor to go up against an idol. I\u2019m really happy to represent Commerce and also to represent New York City.
