BALTIMORE, Maryland, October 1. AFTER a bit of an NCAA Clearinghouse snafu including an unapproved online English class, North Baltimore's Chase Kalisz will be deferring entrance to the University of Georgia until the spring semester.<\/p>\n
Originally on track to enroll at Georgia and begin his collegiate career this fall, Kalisz found out this summer that a previously-approved high school English class taken online was no longer approved unbeknownst to both Kalisz and his high school according to his mother Cathy in an exclusive conversation with Swimming World<\/i>. While Kalisz passed the class, the NCAA Clearinghouse rejected it. The NCAA then rejected an appeal this summer. <\/p>\n
Kalisz has since begun taking an NCAA approved English class, and is on pace to complete his coursework at the end of October, even though he has already graduated with a high school diploma. The current plan is for Kalisz to report to Georgia the first week in December according to his mother. <\/p>\n
“Chase has had a great attitude about the entire process,” Cathy Kalisz told Swimming World<\/i>. “He is looking forward to competing for Georgia.”<\/p>\n
Kalisz should have an immediate impact in the spring semester as he competes at both the SEC Championships and NCAA Championships. This summer, Kalisz nearly made the Olympic roster with a strong effort in the 400-meter IM. He then had an outstanding meet in Hawaii as part of the Junior Pan Pacific Championships, when he turned in a stunning time of 4:12.59 in the event to move into the top 15 in the world. With both Ryan Lochte and Michael Phelps no longer in the 400 IM, Kalisz is one of the early favorites to earn a spot on the U.S. Olympic roster in the event in 2016.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
