{"id":321266,"date":"2018-07-26T20:06:15","date_gmt":"2018-07-27T03:06:15","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/?p=321266"},"modified":"2018-07-26T20:06:15","modified_gmt":"2018-07-27T03:06:15","slug":"michael-andrew-holds-off-dressel-to-win-50-fly-set-new-meet-record","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/michael-andrew-holds-off-dressel-to-win-50-fly-set-new-meet-record\/","title":{"rendered":"Michael Andrew Holds Off Dressel To Win 50 Fly, Set New Meet Record"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>After qualifying in a tie for first out of prelims it was 19-year-old\u00a0<strong>Michael Andrew\u00a0<\/strong>who got his hand on the wall first tonight, becoming the first American male to grab a roster spot for the 2019 World Championships.\u00a0The teenager bested the field with a 22.93, his first swim under 23 seconds in the event and just ahead of\u00a0<strong>Caeleb Dressel<\/strong>, who was second in 22.97.<\/p>\n<p>Andrew&#8217;s swim was less than two-tenths off of Dressel&#8217;s American record and just .02 off of\u00a0<strong>Bryan Lundquist&#8217;s\u00a0<\/strong>U.S. Open record from 2009.\u00a0Andrew&#8217;s swim did establish a new meet record, breaking Dressel&#8217;s 23.05 from last summer&#8217;s meet.That is Andrew&#8217;s first major international roster spot for a long course meet, although he will still have to finish in the top 4 in an Olympic event later in the meet if he wants a spot on the Pan Pacs roster.<\/p>\n<p>In third in the final was\u00a0<strong>Chatham Dobbs\u00a0<\/strong>(23.38), while fourth went to\u00a0<strong>Giles Smith\u00a0<\/strong>(23.64). In fifth was\u00a0<strong>John Shebat\u00a0<\/strong>(23.69), while\u00a0<strong>Ryan Held\u00a0<\/strong>(23.70) and\u00a0<strong>Jack Saunderson\u00a0<\/strong>(23.70) both tied for sixth. Rounding out the final was\u00a0<strong>Tate Jackson\u00a0<\/strong>(23.77).<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" data-attachment-id=\"321264\"
