BALTIMORE, Maryland, September 29.THE UMBC swimming and diving teams combined to win 25 events in their season-opening exhibition with Bucknell, Saturday afternoon at the newly-refurbished UMBC Aquatic Complex.<\/p>\n
Senior captain Jennifer Kotonias (Burtonsville, Md.\/Academy of Holy Cross) led the way for the women's team with individual victories in the 100-yd. and 400-yd. IM, as well as the 100 fly. She also helped the 200 medley relay team to a win as the Retrievers swept the relays by also claiming the 200 free relay.<\/p>\n
Kotonias' co-captain Claire Barron (Lowestoft, England\/Benjamin Britten\/New Orleans) also had a strong meet for UMBC, winning the 50 and 200-yd breaststoke events, and helping the victorious 200 medley team. Classmate Tara Morrissette (Somersworth, N.H.\/Saint Thomas Aquinas) also won multiple events, earning first place in the 50 and 200 fly.<\/p>\n
Senior Amy Fay (Haverhill, Mass.\/Haverhill) returned from an arm injury to win the 200 free while junior Erika Ronning (Western Springs, Ill.\/Lyons Township) earned four total wins, capturing the 50 and 100 free events, in addition to anchoring both relays. Junior Talor Tadena (Orangevale, Calif.\/Bella Vista) also picked up a win, taking the 100-yd. breaststroke.<\/p>\n
On the men's side, sophomore Rob Breen (Danvers, Mass.\/St. John's Prep) and junior Johan Rohtla (Tallinn, Estonia\/Tallin Secondary Science) each picked up three individual wins. Breen captured the 200, 500, and 1,000-yd. free events while Rohtla swept the backstroke events while also leading off for the 200 medley team which won.<\/p>\n
Pierre De Waal (Pretoria, South Africa\/Tuks Sport\/Cleveland State) started off his senior year well, sweeping butterfly events while classmates Steve Gallagher (Sinking Spring, Pa.\/Wilson) and Mohamed Hussein (Cairo, Egypt\/Victory College) won the 50 breaststroke and 100 IM, respectively.<\/p>\n
The Retrievers return to the pool in two weeks when the squads host Rider, as well as the James Madison women's team on Oct. 13 for Parents' Weekend.<\/p>\n
