PHOENIX, Arizona, September 28. TODAY, Swimming World<\/i> confirmed that two-time Olympian Anthony Ervin will be competing in all of the 2012 FINA World Cup circuit meets, which begins Tuesday in the United Arab Emirates.<\/p>\n
Ervin returned to professional swimming shortly before the London 2012 Olympics after a very public retirement in 2003 when he auctioned off his Sydney 2000 Olympic gold medal. He won the medal by tying in the 50 freestyle with teammate Gary Hall Jr. Ervin made the 2012 Olympic team against all odds, and placed fifth in the Olympic final of the 50 freestyle. <\/p>\n
The World Cup circuit starts October 2, in Dubai, UAE, and will run for more than a month through November 11. Athletes will travel to the Middle East for two meets, then to Europe for three more, and end their event schedule with three meets in Asia. Although each World Cup meet lasts only two days, athletes typically expect less than a week between competitions. Talk about a grueling travel schedule! Fortunately for Ervin, this travel has become familiar since the London Olympic Games. <\/p>\n
Although Ervin's “home base” is Berkeley, Calif., where he is completing a master's degree in sports and education at the University of California, Berkeley, lately he has been bouncing around the United States “living out of a bag.” His most recent stop was SwimMAC Carolina where he took a couple weeks to train with Dave Marsh and fellow sprinter Nick Brunelli. <\/p>\n
