Many of those who compete in the multisport events have backgrounds in competitive swimming. Triathlons, aquathlons, and aquabike races allow for former swimmers to remain in the water while also developing cycling and running skills in a competitive environment.<\/p>\n<p>Joining the triathlon circuit might just land you an international trip to compete against athletes from all over the world if you place high enough in local and national races. One such race that showcased international talent was the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fyn2018.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Fynske Bank Multisport World Championships Triathlon Festival 2018<\/a> hosted from July 6 to July 14, offering a multitude of open and age group events.<\/p>\n<div class=\"oembed-wrap\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Fyn 2018 ITU Multisport World Championships Festival Promotion Video\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/jTnJ19TRMMg?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/div>\n<p>To compete in the age group divisions of the festivals, athletes had to meet certain <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fyn2018.com\/athlete_info\/sign-up\/world_championships\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">qualifying criteria<\/a> determined by their country&#8217;s triathlon federation and possess a triathlon license appointed by their country&#8217;s national federation. For example, to\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.teamusa.org\/USA-Triathlon\/USAT-for-Me\/Team-USA\/Qualification\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">qualify for a spot on the US team<\/a>, an athlete has to rank top 18 in their age group at a prior appointed national championship race. Those who were unable to make the age group qualifying standards were welcome to participate in the open events.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Athletes from all over the world gathered in Denmark to compete, posting competitive times and showcasing some of the best racing the International Triathlon Union has to offer. Among the events were the following: aquathlon (swimming and running), cross triathlon (off-road racing), duathlon (cycling and running), aquabike (swimming and cycling), and long distance triathlon. The duathlon, aquabike, and long distance triathlon took place in Odense; the cross triathlon took place in Svendborg, and the aquathlon took place in Middelfart.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>Duathlon<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The festival opened with sprint and Olympic distance <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.fyn2018.com\/athlete_info\/courses\/duathlon\/duathlon_sprint\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">duathlons<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, taking place from from July 6 to July 8. On the <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.triathlon.org\/results\/result\/2018_fyn_itu_duathlon_world_championships\/322741\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">men&#8217;s side<\/a>, Denmark&#8217;s<\/span> <b>Andreas Schilling<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0took first with a time of 1:35.56, followed by France&#8217;s\u00a0<\/span><b>Yohan Le Berre<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0in a close second with a time of 1:35:57. <\/span><b>Mark Buckingham <\/b>of\u00a0<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Great Britain took third with a time of 1:36:47. On the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.triathlon.org\/results\/result\/2018_fyn_itu_duathlon_world_championships\/322742\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">women\u2019s side<\/span><\/a>, <b>Sandrina Illes <\/b>of\u00a0<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Austria took first with a time of 1:49:29, followed closely by Japan&#8217;s\u00a0<\/span><b>Ai Ueda<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0at 1:49:38 and <\/span><b>Georgina Schwiening<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0of Great Britain at 1:49:47.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>Cross Triathlon<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Two days later on July 10, the festival moved to Svendborg, Denmark, where the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.triathlon.org\/multisports\/cross_triathlon\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">c<\/a><\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.triathlon.org\/multisports\/cross_triathlon\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ross triathlon<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> was held. This <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fyn2018.com\/athlete_info\/courses\/cross_triathlon\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">off-road race<\/a><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> consisted of a 1 km swim, a 27 km bike ride, and a 10 km run. <\/span><b>Ruben Ruzafa<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0of Spain was the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.triathlon.org\/results\/result\/2018_fyn_itu_cross_triathlon_world_championships\/322726\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">first man to finish<\/a> with a time of 2:06:04. New Zealand&#8217;s\u00a0<\/span><b>Sam Osborne<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0came in second <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">with a time of 2:07:51 and France&#8217;s\u00a0<\/span><b>Brice Daubord<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0came in third with a 2:08:39. For the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.triathlon.org\/results\/result\/2018_fyn_itu_cross_triathlon_world_championships\/322727\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">women<\/span><\/a>, Great Britain&#8217;s\u00a0<b>Lesley Patterson <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and <\/span><b>Nicole Walterson<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0 claimed first and second with times of 2:27:10 and 2:29:41. <\/span><b>Eleonora Peroncini<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0of Italy came in third at 2:29:57.<\/span><\/p>\n<div Middelfart, Denmark on July 12, where the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Aquathlon\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">aquathlon<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> took place.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.fyn2018.com\/athlete_info\/courses\/aquathlon\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">course<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> was\u00a0<\/span><b>Emmanuel Lejeune<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0of Belgium with a 27:46, followed by Australia&#8217;s\u00a0<\/span><b>Nathan Breen<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0at 27:57 and France&#8217;s\u00a0<\/span><b>Alexis Kardes<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0at 28:00. For the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.triathlon.org\/results\/result\/2018_fyn_itu_aquathlon_world_championships\/322735\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">women<\/span><\/a> <b>Edda Hannesdottir <\/b>of\u00a0<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Iceland won with a time of 31:15, followed by <\/span><b>Hannah Kitchen<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0of Great Britain in second with a 32:03 and Serbia&#8217;s\u00a0<\/span><b>Vida Medic<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0in third with a 32:17.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>Aquabike and Long Distance Triathlon<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">On July 14 &#8211; the last day of the festival &#8211; Odense, Denmark hosted both the <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">aquabike<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and the long distance triathlon. The aquabike is raced on the same course that is used for the long distance triathlon.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Between a half and a full Ironman, the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.fyn2018.com\/athlete_info\/courses\/long_distance\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">long distance triathlon<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> started with a 3 km swim in Odense Harbor, followed by a 121.5 km bike ride and a run of 30.7 km. For the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sportstiming.dk\/event\/5608\/results?round=19661&amp;gender=\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">women<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><b>Amy Pritchard<\/b> of\u00a0<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Great Britain took first with a 3:58:54, New Zealand&#8217;s <strong>Mikayla Harvey<\/strong> came in second with a 4:01:48 and Great Britain&#8217;s\u00a0<\/span><b>Alex Clay<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0in third with a time of 4:02:44.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Spain&#8217;s <strong>Pablo<\/strong><b> Dapena Gonzalez<\/b>\u00a0won the long distance triathlon for the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sportstiming.dk\/event\/5608\/results?round=19537&amp;gender=\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">men<\/a> with a time of 5:19:30, followed by <b>Ruedi Wild <\/b>of\u00a0Switzerland in second with a time of 5:22:13 and <b>Marko Albert <\/b>of\u00a0Estonia took third with a 5:22:27. <b>Helle Frederiksen<\/b>\u00a0of Denmark won the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sportstiming.dk\/event\/5608\/results?round=19538&amp;gender=\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">women\u2019s<\/a> long distance triathlon with a time of 5:49:04, <b>Barbara Riveros<\/b>\u00a0of Chile came in second with a 5:51:22, and in third with a 5:55:47 was Australia\u2019s <b>Annabel Luxford<\/b>.<\/p>\n<h2>The Thrill of Open Water Swimming<\/h2>\n<p>While open water swimming poses several different challenges than pool swimming, one of the biggest fears in open water is the marine life. Many triathlons take place on inland lakes, but the lucky few on the coast get to compete in the ocean or in salt water.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">One of the long distance triathlon age group competitors, <\/span><b>Todd Mitchell <\/b>of the\u00a0<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">United States, describes the swim:<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThey started [the triathlon] by age group. It was in a harbor, but not what people would think of as a harbor; like a wide canal, maybe 50 or 100 meters wide. There were lots of little jellyfish that did not sting at the beginning of the race, but as you went on there were less and less. I guess at the other race in Middelfart there were lots of jellyfish that stung.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Once you get used to swimming in open water, the fear subsides and you&#8217;re able to relax and truly enjoy your surroundings while doing the sport you love.
